New Kitten, ill?

We have had our two kittens for almost 4 weeks, they had their first injections 3 weeks ago, due for the 2nd lot on Saturday.

Girl kitten however seems to not be well, I think.

She was fine and full of beans yesterday morning, ate her breakfast as normal etc. However since yesterday evening she just stays in her bed, or dozing on top of the sky box. Last night I assumed she was worn out from playing, she didn't have her suual crazy half hour in the evening that she usually has.

This morning, she stayed in her bed instead of following me downstairs meowing for food. I brought her down and put her in front of her bowl, she just sniffed it then walked off and curled up on top of the sky box again.

I checked her over, no marks, gums are pink, def no fleas.

She just seems a bit listless and disinterested. I was worried as wasn't sure if she had drank, so i drizzled water over her mouth so she had to lick it off, she was not very impressed with me.

Any ideas? Not sure if its illness or a sleepy growth spurt. She is 13 weeks.

No, not normal. I would ring the vet.

I'd get a vets appointment asap, you need to ensure she doesn't get dehydrated as she's small. They're probably give her an antibiotic as a precaution.

Thanks Fluffy, we have a 24h vet hospital half hour down the road, they have her records as its part of our vet chain, I am at work so will take her as soon as I am home if she hasn't miraculously perked up.

Update, got home and kitty was limping, took her to the 24h vets who said there is no sign of swelling etc so they think soft tissue damage. Her temp was raised so possibly due to stress but antibiotics given as a precaution and anti inflammatories prescribed.

Aw poor puss. Hope she gets better soonThanks

Before I read about the limp I was going to suggest Caliciviris and now I'm sure of it. It starts with similar symptoms and progresses to a limp. It's a bit similar to our cold and cats often get it from their mum if they weren't up to date with their vaccinations. Despite injections if they've already had it they can't become immune. It will probably reoccur infrequently but during periods of stress so keep an eye out. Make sure they keep eating, offer tuna or warm food up so they can eat smell it better. Imagine you feel rotten with a bad cold, unable to smell.
I'm surprised the vet didn't suggest this. Check the mouth for lesions as a sure way to tell, although an absence of them doesn't mean it's not it. Hope they're feeling better soon xx

Thanks Freakin vet didnt even mention that possibility. She has definitely perked up today and is moving about a bit more albeit slowly and cautiously

Thanks too Freakin. Never heard of this diagnosis before.

freakinbananaspiders · 08/09/2018 20:40

No problem. Hope she's feeling better today. If it happens again a painkiller is probably the best option (Metacam or similar) but antibiotics don't hurt if given infrequently. X

Hi, Kitty is much better, eating normally, starting to gently play again, not quite tearing around as usual but definitely working her way up to it
