Asking for my cat to be pts

So puss is around 12yrs old, acquired him as a young cat, told he was about 15 weeks when I got him but was very large so not convinced he was that young tbh.
He’s been a fab cat, very laid back etc but in the last year his behaviour has started to decline to the point now I’m finding it unmanageable.
He’s become very lazy and just sleeps most of the time, he barely steps outside anymore, he cries for wet food but when you put his bowl down he doesn’t realise and I have to carry him over to I think several times beforehand he suddenly realises it’s there. He’s starting peeing all over the house, which he’s has never down before, over toddlers toys etc, bathroom, kitchen, everywhere.
He had a problem a few years ago with cats bullying him, so we chipped him and had a micro cat flat put in, and he was licking him self anxiously, this has now got out of control and he I said literally licking himself bald, he doesn’t have fleas.

We’ve had new cats in the area recently with new people moving in nearby (about 6/7 new cats in close surroundings) so that’s prob not helping but I’m at my wits end, he won’t use a litter tray and the urinating all over the house is driving me mad, he cries a lot now which he’s never done before and sits crying/scratching for no apparent reason in the early hours.

I have tried the usual things like feliway and using an itch stick bar on his fur but no change.

I think he may have feline dementia and will be ringing the vets tomorrow.

Would they agree to pts in these circumstances? Does anyone know the rough cost?

I couldn't put up with that, either. Hope you don't get flamed.

Aprilshowersnowastorm · 05/09/2018 20:26

When my 'disabled' dcat was weeing anywhere but the litter tray we had her pts.
Can't remember the price but dm paid £96 for her dcat Shock.
Dm said the sympathy card off the vet was a nice touch.
Bloody gold coffin it should have been imo.

MrsMozart · 05/09/2018 20:27

Sounds like his quality of life isn't good.

Sorry, I can't remember what our vet charged.

makingmiracles · 05/09/2018 20:43

It’s heart breaking as he’s been such a cool cat, 4 children and brilliant with them all especially when they were young, he’d sit there and let them pull him about, never would nip or scratch them, so very laid back but I’m at my wits end with him now and I don’t want to feel cross with him as I don’t think it’s his fault. I hope the vet will be understanding and not try to convince me to try this that or the other, does the vet have the final say on wether they will pts? I honestly don’t know what I am going to do if vet won’t, a shelter won’t take him with all the issues he’s developed.

Once they get to the incontinent stage it means their healths declined and their quality of life is no longer good. That as well as stress licking and not able to identify food without help means the poor chap isnt good. Sorry to hear about him op but putting him down is the kindest thing to do for him. Flowers

Want2beme · 05/09/2018 20:47

Take him to the vet for an examination and see what they make of it. He sounds extremely stressed. The other cats and maybe even your DC's, could have pushed him over the edge. It's awful when they pee around the house. Maybe another quiet single-cat home would be better for him.

A0001 · 05/09/2018 20:51

Have you taken him to a vet and explained the issues to see what they advise?

Wolfiefan · 05/09/2018 20:56

You need to see the vet and see if they can find a medical cause for these issues. 12 isn't really old. Thyroid issue? UTI? Why are you sure there are no fleas? Our old girl had a flea allergy. What's an itch stick bar?
I wouldn't pts without investigating.

Ski37 · 05/09/2018 20:59

Sorry to hear this OP, he is a cat who has obviously been very loved by you and your family but it sounds like he is struggling now and his quality of life’s isnt what he should have. I hope the vet is sympathetic with you. I think you are doing the kind thing no matter how difficult it feels.

continuallychargingmyphone · 05/09/2018 21:00

Hang on, has no one checked that it’s a UTI or anything?

gamerwidow · 05/09/2018 21:04

We had our 13 yo cat pta last year when he became fecally incontinent and unable to keep any food in and was wasting away. I think it cost about £70 including shared cremation. It would have cost less if we’d have taken him home and buried him ourself and more if we had wanted an individual cremation and to keep the ashes.

gamerwidow · 05/09/2018 21:07

In our case the vet offered investigations if we wanted to persue the cause but said that in his opinion pts was an option because cats do not like to be dirty and his quality of life was poor. They were keen to stress no judgement would be made and left the option of treatment of pts in our hands.

Pywife2 · 05/09/2018 21:16

Poor old fellow. I feel sorry for you having to make this decision, but I would be thinking the same way.

ifonly4 · 05/09/2018 21:24

One way or the other, you need to speak to your vet. Phone and ask the receptionist if you can speak to a vet first, it may be you can make a decision without having to take him in for assessment. Cats can have urinary problems from time to time, but it's the fact he doesn't know his food is there that raises questions.

It's so hard making that final decision. My boy was obvious, he had kidney disease and I just knew he couldn't go on. My girl was deaf and blind, I suspect senile and was struggling to find food, even now I wonder if she could still be around, but in my heart I know neither of us could carry on like that.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/09/2018 22:33

Fatty's final vets bill including and individual cremation and a clay paw print was £150. I'm sure you wouldn't be thinking about this unless you are pretty sure it's time.

Catzpyjamas · 05/09/2018 22:38

Has the cat actually been checked by the vet wrt this behaviour?

BrevilleTron · 06/09/2018 22:57

It sounds like he isn't enjoying life at the moment. I recently lost my cat when he died in theatre but if he had got to that stage where he had to be taken to food I'd think it the kindest solution. We love our pets dearly and sometimes it's hard I really feel for you Flowers
