Out of our 2 cats he was the quiet one, his meow was like a sore throat barely audible, he never made any noise in 6 years. We moved house 6 months ago and he meowed non stop for 2 weeks. ALL. NIGHT. We spoke to the vet plugged in feliway and gave him some calming tablets. He's had all his checks in the last 2 months and he's fit and well.

He's now very settled and loves his new house but he's still so vocal, he'll come into the bedroom at 6am and 'announce himself' he's constantly brrr brrr brrr am I missing something?

Cats don’t like moving in my experience, so I am pleased that he has settled in his new home.

Do you pay him attention when he announces himself? Just wondering if the calling has become a habit, especially if it gets him your attention.

Personally I have owned a few cats from kittens, and I too have noticed them becoming more vocal as they age. My last cat, would constantly meow loudly when he thought we should be up to give him breakfast and if he couldn’t get our attention in the house he would go into the garden and meow outside our bedroom window! Knowing that would get the desired result!

Sounds like you have done everything right, seeing the vets etc. Has anything else changed with you cat? Increased appetite?

QueenOfIce · 05/09/2018 07:40

Thanks for the reply, nothings changed he's healthy no increased appetite. He was having an awful time with an unuttered male in our old house he was constantly being bitten and scratched. We now have a large garden which we have cat proofed so both of them have plenty of safe space.

I don't tend to acknowledge him, he'll make some weird meow meow brr brr thing in the morning. He's sitting next to me now curled up fast asleep.

Just want to make sure he's ok and we've not missed anything. Age wise they're nearly 8 so could him being older be a reason or maybe he likes the acoustics?!

We have two cats who have become more and more vocal over the last 2 years. They're now 6 years old and regularly "chat" to us. There are a variety of sounds for different situations. It's made life with them great fun as I feel I understand them better. (Does that make me sound like crazy cat lady? 😯)

Sounds like he felt he had to be quiet at your old place because of the bully - he didn't want to alert him to his presence. He knows he's safe now so can chatter all he wants.

We had a silent cat until her first time in the cattery - then on the way home she yelled and yelled. Has toned it down a bit but now she knows what her voice is for.

Maybe he's just one happy cat, he has a lovely safe new home, pics please.Smile

I have had cats that have suddenly become very vocal, after many years.
One in particular has become very chatty, and extremely loud!

Sounds like he's settled and feels safe with you, and he's letting you know. Clever puss!

I think this is quite common - cats do seem to get more vocal as they get older. One of mine had the same scratchy non-voice for years (except bizarrely when he was using the litter box, when he was extremely loud). At the grand old age of 12, he seems to have finally found his voice and has become audible. My mother's Siamese gave a running commentary on life in general and one of my others is also very vocal - loud meows if you touch her, surprise her, interact in any way with her. I love all the little noises they make - it adds such a lot to their character.

Our 13 year old, previously very quiet, cat found his voice 2 years ago when we brought home our latest addition, a young chatty female cat who trills and squeaks all the time 😀 He hasn't shut up since, and even wakes us up in the middle of the night, every night, yelling at us to stroke him. It's so cute! I think cats living in the same household copy each other more than we realise. The youngest cat immediately copied the eldest's penchant for drinking only from the kitchen tap, and stubbornly won't go near her water bowl any more. If one sees the other washing, they'll start having a wash as well. It's quite odd really.

Snorg was originally a mute cat. You'd see her meow but wouldn't hear it. She now lov s to announce her presence. Particularly at 3& 4 &5 am! I think it's because she's more confident.

I love a chatty cat, I think you have done the right thing in talking to your vet though just in case.
Mine started ‘chatting’ to me about 3 months after I adopted him as he became more confident. I’ve now had him 2 years, and he has 5 very distinct noises:

  1. the ‘I’ve brought you a present’ yowl - results in me desperately trying to find what he has released into the house- it’s usually still under his paw!)
  2. the ‘where are you’ meow- if he comes inside and I’m upstairs or in another room he whines until I come to find him- he is more than capable of looking for me himself and doesn’t do it if someone else is looking after him.
  3. the ‘I’m bored and want to play’ - he looks me directly in the eye and let’s out small meows before scratching the sofa whilst also maintaining eye contact until I go and get get ‘da bird’ ....
  4. the ‘I’m hungry’ - short sharp meows, almost like a bark or chirrup, usually done at 4,5 then 6 am before he goes for the big guns and sits on my head- a move guaranteed to get me out of bed.
  5. the purr- sounds like an engine but is my favourite noise!

Having read this back I am welll aware I sound like a total crazy cat lady - he definitely has me well trained!!!! ( and I always though I was a dog person, couldn’t see the point of cats- until I had my own 😻)
