Are Main Coons any more trouble than smaller cats?

I'm a newbie cat owner, so newbie that I haven't actually got one yet! I love love love MCs, unlikely to get one as my dds met an enormous one recently and are a bit freaked by it! But out of interest are they any different in terms of care needed than your average moggy? I know they need grooming etc but other than that?

Forgot to mention the gifts: snakes, pigeons and frogs have
all been brought indoors, all alive!

A lot of the traits mentioned here aren’t specific to Maine Coons, though.

Very vocal? Check.
Brings delightful gifts in? Check.
High maintenance and demanding? Check.

These are just cat characteristics!

Have had at least two cats all my life, but only had MC in the past few years. The MC are massively more vocal than any others, almost human like when they shout. Never had cats bring in such large sized prey than these do. Wouldn’t say they are demanding though, they are v easy going. They are the only cats I’ve ever had who love water too (one once jumped in the bath with me!).

All beautiful! Mine is just a normal (rescue) moggie and he's over 8 kgs!

I should say that whilst enthusiastically chasing pigeons, our Maine Coon has never actually caught anything. He stood on a spider once by mistake, if that counts.

He also steals neighbours' paintbrushes. Don't ask.

He chirrups rather than miaows, but is mostly quiet.

I have had 3 Maine Coons.
No 1... Morpheus, was a dream cat. HUGE, beautiful 24 pound lynx of a cat who gave love like nothing I have seen before or since. Even our local vet asked to photograph him, and he slept every night with his paws round my neck. He died of bone cancer at 12 :(

No 2 (and 3) siblings.

Ophelia is about 17 pounds, a large female, daft as a brush. She is very affectionate and very very loud.. a real talker (you can have a full conversation with her!) She's also a diva.. if her blankie isn't right on the sofa she shout til you smooth it! She loves being groomed.

Oberon is a 25 pound asshole!!! Spectacular to look at as he huge and ginger. He is totally unfaithful and spends 80% of his days 4 doors down at the neighbours! He refuses to be groomed..every.. neither we nor Thelma his second home lady can groom him and he has to be shaved at the vets under anaesthetic which costs £160 twice a year!!!

But I do love him :D

Grooming is essential... and depends very much on the cat's personality. But other than that they are fabulous cats and everyone who comes to out house wants one!

I am here and reading all these fab stories and loving the pics. I've been laid out with an excruciating dental abscess and this thread has been cheering me up, so think what a real cat would do!

Sigh, they're so beautiful.

NO ! mainkoons are the best! I have two ans they are honestly the most affectionate cats and you can do anything to them! They are big, cuddly and love to play!

I will say they need a lot of care! Grooming everyday teeth brushing due to them being prone to gum problems which one of mine has got so since I've been told by the vet to bush his teeth! They are now 13 and honestly still a bundle of joy! Best cats I've every met

StillMedusa · 03/09/2018 22:17

Poppy
I'm in awe that you can brush your teeth. Not even my Morpheus would let me do that. So far mine have not developed any gum problems but get them checked every time they get jabs.
