My old lady's eye

I just noticed her eye looks weird. She’s 19 and otherwise ok. Demanding food/ attention/ cuddles. What could it be? I’d like to avoid vets if I can due to her age and the fact she hates it

Isn't she lovely. I don't think you'll be able to avoid the vet, unfortunately. It's probably best to have it checked. I couldn't say what it might be.

Might be just the picture but it looks like she's got a bit of eye discharge? Try wiping it away with cool boiled water on cotton wool and see If it returns.

Dollymixture22 · 30/08/2018 21:37

Is her pupil an irregular shape? Or is that the photos and its the discharge you are concerned about?

I’ll try a warm water wipe. She’s feisty though. It just looks “weird”. She’s fine in herself though

Yes. Just looks like eye snot. Snorg gets it a lot! If you look close enough you can see it. I occasionally give her a course of chloramphenicol if it doesn't clear up in a few days.

Is the eye colour changing or getting blotches? Years ago my cats green eyes suddenly got a marbled effect. Vet was bemused but could find no problems. His eyes have stayed like this and has no issues with vision.

It looks to me like the 3rd eyelid is visible, which usually indicates illness but it's really hard to say what exactly - could be something fairly minor. But a vet visit or at least a call to your vet's for advice would be my recommendation.

Polkapjs · 31/08/2018 18:17

I’ll maybe give them a ring - she’s fussed for food and been her usual self so I’m not concerned though at her age something will go wrong soon I guess...

By the way it looks like a combo of eye snot and the marbles now I see your pics. Thank you all

It’s something called hooper syndrome. Not treatable so a watch and wait and go for drops if her eye gets infected. It affects the nerve anywhere from brain to end of spine apparently
Otherwise she is fine. Life in the old girl yet!
