My cat only eats the gravy on pouch food Why?

Hi there, I see there was a thread about this in the past. This is my first ever message on line, so be gentle!
Basil is a year old, healthy and neutralised as my daughter says.
He keeps howling & bothering everyone for food but only licks the gravy off - I always have dried food and water available. I've tried different brands but to be honest, he's taking the pXXX.
He used to eat it. As a fearsome hunter who can catch frogs with his eyes closed, I do mash it up for him like a baby - it works sometimes.

Any advice?

Thanks!

Have you tried him with just the pâté type food?

My cat licks the gravy off then goes back for the meaty bits later one. She also likes to take it out of the bowl onto the floor and flick the gravy all up the kitchen wall Smile

My 10 furry masters are on a raw diet but I also feed them kibble, we had too much trouble with runny poops with pouches, but my epilepsy baby is still on pouches. And she will only eat Gourmet gravy ones.

if you are interested in feeding your neutralised master raw OP I get mine the chicken blocks from Pets at Home they are in the freezer section and are 99p a block it is whole ground up chicken so has all the benefits they need you should get 4 meals for one cat out of a block. And just defrost it and feed it to him raw. My masters have flourished due to their raw diet but I do supplement it with steak mince and diced beef and prawns. And the kibble I feed them is purizon which i get from zooplus.

I was looking after a friends cat recently, they left loads of iams wet food and biscuits which was her usual diet. For three days she ate nothing, I was wafting tempting sardines around like nobody's business, but not a mouthful of food passed those pouting lips, I even weighed the biscuits to see if she was sneaking a few, she was drinking though so that was a relief . I then hit the shelves and got tasters of all the posh stuff, Sheba, encore, Lily's kitchen , the delicious looking soup etc and eventually she condescended to eat a bit of cat soup and the fishy encore. She had also started eating her biscuits so I left it at that. Expensive complementary food and biscuits. She survived. They know what they are doing the minxes.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/08/2018 17:08

Perhaps he wants you to warm it up?

cecinestpasunepipe · 31/08/2018 17:26

I buy my two the massively expensive Gourmet cat soup. One of them eats the gravy and the other eats the solid stuff. I separate it before giving it to them, so it works out quite well. Then they swap dishes to make sure the other hasn't left any of their preferred part. They are also, not surprisingly, on Hills Prescription Metabolic Weight Loss dry food. Oddly, I never see the fat one eat, I think she has ishoos!

Penninepain · 31/08/2018 17:35

Mine has 24hr access to dry food and water.

He gets fed wet food twice a day. He likes Sheba (for example), choes himself eating it so fast, so I buy a 20 pack of Sheba.
No.
He hates Sheba, sniffs and walks away, glancing at me disdainfully.
I try him on the soups. He loves the soups. I am not fooled though, i try him for two or three days on the soups. He loves them.
I buy a 20 pack of the soups.
He hates them. Licks sadly at the edge of the bowl nd looks at me sadly before stlking away.

Repeat this ad infinitum.

There are times when I really, really like dogs 😁

Penninepain · 31/08/2018 17:36

Sorry for typos..... i have had a glass of Friday wine....😶

Vitalogy · 31/08/2018 17:42

Perhaps he wants you to warm it up? wouldn't surprise me, body temperature Confused I used to chill the masters in the fridge when we were having the heatwave. Hmm

ConfusedDotty · 31/08/2018 17:46

Mine will only eat the Felix with the crunchy things you sprinkle on top. He could be ‘starving ‘ but will not, no way ever, touch the meat/fish mush until he hears the crunchy noise then am sure he smiles and tucks in.

MalloryLaurel · 31/08/2018 17:50

Is he too young to have teeth problems?
Our cat would only eat at our neighbours and their cat would only eat at ours. The cats were friends.

Vitalogy · 31/08/2018 17:53

The cats were friends. Aww.

Ihatemycar · 31/08/2018 17:54

They love the gravy. I give ours cat soups. A bit expensive but no waste.

BlueEyedBengal · 31/08/2018 17:55

My Bengal does that , spends all his time licking them dry and then refuses to touch the rest. I now feed him high quality dried and he is happy. This is a photo of said fussy puss for you to seeSmile

Thanks Guys,
I think the sugar thing is true and I agree that Whiskers and Felix are horrible! They do look like cobbled stones...
I must admit I've never monitored the flavours, just got mixed packets...OH HOW THOUGHTLESS OF ME! POOR BASIL!

Yes, about the fresh water bowl - what is the point?! Baz drinks the toilet water and that's OK by him! Also bath water with bubblebath - I will tip-toe around the sides annoying you, knocking everything off until I slip and then it's YOUR FAULT!
I've ordered some cat soup...
Check out if this photo from Bazalicious in 'Love It' comes through!
Keep in touch!

I do love cats, they are much more fun than dogs.

Kool4katz · 31/08/2018 18:11

I buy pet food from zooplus online and stick to grain free varieties as previous cat was allergic to grain. I buy mostly Bozita chunks in the pouch boxes and Purizon dry food. All of mine seem happy with these but won't touch Whiskas, Sheba or the other tinned cat foods you can buy in supermarkets.

Earslaps · 31/08/2018 18:16

I get my two the German brands of cat food from zooplus- animonda carny, feringa duo and smilla. They are like a very chunky pate with visible lumps of offally bits in, there's only jelly around the edge of the tin.

They absolutely gobble it up and it's great for their health and teeth as there are no grains and no sugars- just meat, offal and calcium carbonate.

They also have Natural Instinct raw food sometimes and get grain free dry very occasionally as their treats (I put it in puzzle feeders for them). Plus occasional tins of Butchers Complete cat food- it's cheap and grain free but more the jelly and chunks style- they do tend to lick off the jelly first and go back later for the chunks.

My cats have such shiny coats and are very energetic. They are only 1, but so far there are no problems with their teeth. My vet says dry is not necessary for good teeth but the regular wet foods available in the UK have grains and added sugars that encourage build up of tartar.

flapjackfairy · 31/08/2018 18:17

What do people recommend as a good dry food please. ?
Our cat has started doing this as well and i am fed up of wasting food. He is nearly a year old .

BlueEyedBengal · 31/08/2018 18:23

P u r i n a one is my cat fav but he love Bengal food too. He refuses to eat whiskers or cheaper brands he i in wonderful condition with a great coat and wonderful teeth, not bad for a 9 yr old make sure there's plenty of fresh water as they do need to drink more with driedSmile

kangapants · 31/08/2018 18:33

Hunter - Murderers!
What I don't understand is how come Basil (and the other cats) can plan these precise, SAS army-type captures of birds, mice and in my case frogs (where did he get one in Newcross Gate?) but then can't handle a bowl of mashed Sheba -
it's ridiculous and they are taking the piss out of their Masters - AND they are rude! What's with the Linford Christie dash from the kitchen to the living room - I have a flat - and then back again knocking glasses, phones & computers off the table whilst laughing?
And another thing...when my landline rings and I do the dash to the phone, why does Basil think it's always for him and we have to do the Tango to get to the phone - it's not as if he answers the bloody thing!

Thanks Blue i will try them x

Vitalogy · 31/08/2018 18:38

I must admit I've never monitored the flavours, just got mixed packets...OH HOW THOUGHTLESS OF ME! POOR BASIL! Oh come on, rotation, rotation, rookie mistake.

kangapants · 31/08/2018 20:24

You are quite right - he's gone hunting in the garden right now...I knew a really executive chief for Whiskers years ago and what with the perfect cat tasters cats - the humans had to taste the food too! Obviously it won't hurt you but I think it was a good idea!

Beaverhausen · 31/08/2018 20:32

@flapjackfairy I feed mine Purizon which i get from zooplus £34 for a 6.5kg bag. 70% protein, no grain and my cats love it.
