Sorry, it may be a bit long. A family moved in to our street bringing a young cat with them. They seem to be a nice family and went on holiday for a week or so recently.
According to our neighbours though, their chosen method for caring for their pet cat while they were away was to just lock him outside. For the entire time. The neighbours had to feed him and give him shelter for the week. The family never offered to repay anything for all the food the neighbours had to buy. They didn't even think they had done anything wrong.
Now I didn't believe this was the whole story. Maybe the neighbours had got it wrong and was feeding an already fed cat, He is after all a pet indoor/outdoor cat and as such, is likely unable to feed himself properly so maybe there was a friend popping by no one noticed and was putting a bit of food out. (Not ideal but it's something.)
However, one of the kids was chatting to me today. She told me she was getting a new kitten at 6 weeks old (I know, I know!) next week. So out of curiosity I asked who their cat sitter was for their holiday. She told me cheerfully that it wasn't anybody. They put him outside.
I asked who fed him though. She looked thoughtful then said "I think the neighbours said they had fed him sometimes" to which I (possibly a bit too snippily) replied, "No, you mean the neighbours were forced to feed him because your family left your cat to starve?". The kid looked a little guilty/hurt.
Now I feel shit. I shouldn't have said anything but I can't stand the thought of animal abuse or neglect, especially knowing they are looking to get a second pet. I would have happily fed their cat, as I assume many of the neighbours would have too but no one was asked.
Anyone of you fellow cat slaves know what I should do? Should I apologise?
