Where to get a kitten?

Hi all

I had a cat when I was younger but only had dogs since.

My son is desperate for a kitten and I would quite like to add a furry member to our household.

I've looked at rescues in our area and they either don't have kittens, or won't rehome with children under 12.

Other than rescues, where is the best place to get a kitten (I know pets at home is basically the devil! Grin)

Any advice appreciated

Thanks

Cat protection.Celua Hammond Trust. Where in the UK do you live. Our local branch is full of kittens.

I've checked all the local rescue websites and there does seem to be an issue with younger kids (school age so not toddlers) and lack of kittens.

Any way of getting a kitten other than rescue that's legit?

Vets sometimes advertise kittens and cats that need rehoming, it's a shame no rescue centres near you can help.

I will check at the vets. Thanks that's really helpful

Don't know which rescue places are near you but we had no problem adopting 2 kittens from the RSPCA 3 years ago when our two children were under 12.

A friend of ours picked up two feral kittens from a farm when she happened to pass by to buy some fruit. Apparently the farm frequently has unwanted kittens.

The cats protection league are stricter on requirements re children etc & keep kittens until they are 12 weeks old. We had two from there before we had children.

We had no problems getting a kitten from a local cat rescue centre when our son was 7 so not sure on the under 12 rule. It had had its first set of innocularions before he cane to us and we arranged the neutering. Do try all local rescues - ours was in a mixed litter of over 10, so many do need a good home.

If you don’t mind saying your area or PM it me I am sure there will be rescues that will rehome with children. We are coming out of kitten season now so many rescues probably have older kittens that were overlooked. Please don’t disregard the slightly older ones. If it’s a young kitten you want you might have more luck next summer.

Rescues do rehome with children. I volunteer for CP and the staff look on a case by case basis. They would not likely rehome a young kitten or two with a toddler but a slightly older child-yes as long as the kitten takes to them. How old is your son?
Rescues don't always have kittens on their websites so worth calling them.
It is slightly past peak kitten season (thankfully!) but there are definitely little ones waiting for homes. We adopted our lad earlier this year aged about 10 months and he is very playful perhaps a slightly older kitten/young cat is an option?
Don't pay anyone online for kittens!

We got ours from the RSPCA. Cats Protection when I spoke to them sounded like they didn't want us anywhere near their cats (and I'm an experienced cat owner so not like we didn't know what we were doing). They said they would give us a ring and sort a time to come assess us but surprise surprise that never happened.

RSPCA showed us the cats they had in, made recommendations about the characters of the cats they had, let us spend time cuddling and playing with potentials and we went home with a lovely older kitten who was chatty and playful and robust enough to handle our children. I think ds2 the youngest was 3 at the time.

I have friends in rural areas who are always asking around if people can give a kitten a good home. Do you know any farmers? Kitten would be much better off with you than living in a barn!

Do you have a local Facebook group for pets? We have a very active one where I am and, as well as posting lost and found pets, people advertise kittens for sale or that they are looking for kittens.
