Microchip cat flap recommendations

We have found an ill adult male stray/semi feral cat and after it’s vet treatment we want to offer it a home. Unfortunately DH is very allergic to cats so were thinking of building an insulated ‘cat kennel’ in the garden for it with the idea of putting in a heated mat/ blanket in the winter. I was thinking of putting in a microchip cat flap on the ‘kennel’ as we have lots of other cats and foxes in our area. Has anyone done anything similar? Also recommendations for reasonably priced but effective microchip cat flaps

It's an excellent idea & a lovely thing to do for him. I would imagine a battery one is best, unless another cat is right behind him it should work really well.

How inconvenient of your dh to be allergic though Grin

We have a Sure Flap microchip cat flap and it works very well. We've had it for years and the only time we've had an issue is when we've not noticed that the batteries are low and then it no longer works. It had a flashing red light to tell you when they need changed, so we just have to remind ourselves to keep an eye on it.

Thanks for the recommendations I’ll have a look at those I just hope he’ll keep coming back to our garden once he’s finished his treatment. I also think being semi feral he prefers an outdoor life hanging out with his cat friends and as we don’t live near busy roads he should be fine. If he’ll stay I’m going to try to train him to come to the back door to be fed.

I’ve always had cats but not since I met DH but this one unexpectedly came into our lives and we’ve fallen for his feline charms Grin

We also have a sureflap but it took our cats a couple of weeks to get used to it with the fairly loud click it makes each time they approach.

They were used to a normal cat flap in the same place but we had to prop the new one open for over a week for them to get used to it and then go through the training thing again, pushing the door etc. For us it has been worth it as it stops the random cat that used to come in.

If your potential cat is a bit nervous i would worry that the click may well just put them off altogether.

Is the feral microchipped? If not there's no point spending all that money on the cat flap.
I don't recommend the sure flap. We had one installed as we have a kitten who is too young to go outdoors but he forces his way through after our adult cat. DH took a day off work to install it but we have to unlock it manually when he wants to go out, just the same as our old one.

Sorry just read again that he's at vet so probably will be microchipped.
