Can one cat be really badly affected by the other passing or is this illness?

It has been a horrendous weekend. Very sadly one of our cats (been treated for hyper t for 3 years aged 16) became poorly on Friday not eating or drinking and just laying about. We took him to vet and he was admitted and put on IV antibiotic drip and fluids. He started having horrendous diarrhoea at vet and the antibiotics that should have cleared up any infection did not work. Despite intially perking up he did not really start eating or drinking again. The vet suspected it might be something more sinister due to the diarrhoea that started over weekend and the 1 kg weight loss in last 2 months (though this may have been hyper t not being well controlled).

Our other cat (brothers, don't particularly get on but have been with each other whole life and at least sleeping in same room etc) has definitely been out of sorts since Saturday - drinking a bit but eating very little (he is big fat cat). Small amount of diarrhoea in litter tray in morning. Do you think he may be being affected by missing other cat - is this a thing? and how do you improve things? or do you think he may have something and needs to see someone. Will need new vet as not going back to where we took other cat.

It’s all been very upsetting the last few days as you can imagine. Has anyone lost one cat which immediately affected the other one? Thank you.

Finally just to say this is not due to the weed killer the idiot gardeners sprayed in garden on Saturday as kept the cat which is still at home in until Sunday lunch.

Yes, I would take second cat to a vet. We’ve had cats become unwell when others have gone into ‘hospital’ but turned out to be a genuine illness.

One of my cars got hit by a car a few months ago and died and his little sister pined for about 3 months, tbh she's still not really over it. She didn't eat for over a week and would just walk around miaowing. It broke my heart so much. She still seems depressed and comes to me alot whereas before she used to lie with the other cat.

Yes. Snorg has a love hate relationship with her sister. But was very out of sorts after she was PTS, although she was there and I think understood. Returned to her normal self the minute cheddar set paw in the house. However the diarrhoea is odd. So definitely a vet trip.

Taking Snorg along to be with Fatty was definitely the best decision I made. If it comes to that.(and I hope it doesn't, it's worth considering)

It sounds more like a virus or some kind of infection that both cats have got. If I were you, I'd find a new vet ASAP.

I had to have my 18 yr old cat PTS in April (various things wrong, all being treated for, but her time was up), and my other cat (not related, aged 14) moped around for a week, but wasn't physically unwell.

Vet, NOW.

Hi all. Ok been to vet. Could not find anything structurally wrong though cat refused to open up and could not really check mouth (I think cat eating the tiny amount he has been to one side of mouth). Going for anti nausea and anti diarrhoea jab tomorrow. Had half an appetite stimulant pill. Vet thinks he may be heartbroken :(
