Keeping the cats indoors for a couple of months - what do I need?

Our cats are 10yo. We have two. Theyve been indoor/outdoor as much as they want since they were old enough but we are moving house.

The advice ive seen is to keep them in for a couple of months before letting them explore outside.

Besides a cat litter tray what else should I be providing inside to make sure they are stimulated/entertained during the day? They only really come in to sleep at the moment.

Should add they arent into "play" any more. Love basking in the sun.

Some "safe" areas where they can hide/be left in peace eg a couple of boxes with blankets in.

Scratch posts.

Apparently they need a litter tray each and a spare. They should be kept seperate to their food and water.

Who told you to keep them in for a couple of MONTHS?

I've always had cats (for 38 years) and have never done that. I've moved and kept mine in for a day or two and then gone outside with the cat, to keep an eye on it.

I'm with Lynne1Cat. For a grown up cat a few days in after a move as long as they are happy in their new environment is fine.

I moved a few streets away with my first cat (a stray who had chosen to live with me) and planned to keep him in for a week. He demanded out at 3.00 the first morning (he was VERY loud) and I gave in. Back at 8.00 for his breakfast.

As they’re older they’re less likely to scraper. How secure is the back garden? If quite hard to escape from I’d let them out after a week, when they’re hungry and call them back in for food quite soon after. Repeat for a few days and they should be fine. A couple of months would drive them (and you) crazy Grin

Couple of weeks only, I think.

YouTube. You can play films of birds and squirrels that are specially designed for cats to watch.

But yes to a couple of weeks max. Go out with them the first few times with a pocketful of Dreamies.

It'll probably be raining anyway and they won't want to go out!

Oh thats great! Everyone around me with cats said 6-8 weeks min.

Glad I asked now. Birds on Youtube Grin

I have a new kitten who will be inside until she is six months. While most of her stuff is for play, I did get a window seat which suckers onto the window and gives her a great vantage point to watch the world go by.

First of all, I always put mine in the cattery for a few days when we move and I find the period beforehand more important than after the move. Cats soon sense something different is happening and will often hide.

Then once we’ve moved I let them out within a couple of days. Make sure they’re hungry and go out with them for short periods of time with a few treats. I always make sure they’re inside overnight/when it’s dark for a few weeks until they’ve really settled in.

I did four weeks, he spent a lot of time looking out of the windows and seemed to know his way around quickly.

There's mice videos too. I use them on bonfire night.
