Is it just in one spot? Or more areas than pictured? Where is that spot?

Top belly too and back of the legs

Our cat has developed this also in the last few weeks. He's an outdoor cat, spends a lot of time relaxing in hay bales. It's on his face, under his chin and down his back. He doesn't itch much himself but really is enjoying me scratching him - he's not usually a touchy cat!

My cat developed several patches just like that. The vet didn't know the cause - wasn't fleas, in his opinion - but obviously making him itch and scratch and cause bare patches. I was given some drops to put on the itchy areas, but cat was uncooperative! I'd asked the vet if it could be a food allergy, and he said it could easily be, but difficult to identify allergens in cats.

After a discussion with the vet about elimination diets, I stopped giving my cat food with fish, and tried to get cereal-free food. I also added some drops of Homeopet Skin and Itch Relief (purchased on Amazon) to his food for a time. After a couple of weeks the problem seemed to have resolved itself, and his fur grew back. I have no way of knowing if it was co-incidence or not, unfortunately, but still tend to keep him off fish and cereal. Hope you find a solution soon.

Vet gave our cat steroids injection. Sorted it out.

Google harvest mites.

Will probably need a steroid injection to ease the itching.

My 2 cats (who are sisters) did this until they were almost bald everywhere. After hundreds spent at he vets and no answers we finally got given steroids for them that they have to take indefinitely. Along with their flea treatment religiously, it seems to have done the trick. I think they are allergic to something but the vets weren't entirely sure what 🙄 More of a guessing game! Nightmare!

A flea bite allergy?

celtiethree · 07/08/2018 21:12

Our cat also couldn’t stop scratching - it’s worse in the summer. They think she may have a pollen allergy. A steroid injection made a big difference, she’ll need one every 4 to 6 weeks - until winter.

I know this is an older thread, but for those cats with allergies I can’t understand why your Vets didn’t do an allergy blood test. They’re not cheap but probably cheaper than the hundreds you could spend treating the problem and infinitely better than putting them on steroids indefinitely.

I now know exactly what my cat is allergic too, and how strongly he is allergic to each thing. One of his allergies is chicken so his diet was immediately changed when we got the results.
