At the end of my patience

I've got 6 cats. They're all rescues and all lived with me since kittens. For the most part they're all healthy -- one has an immune issue that's being monitored, but otherwise clean bill of health for all 6. They're all neutered. They're all calm, friendly, clean boys.

I had a baby 7 months ago. For 6 months, no problems at all. Then the past month one of my cats, Rambo, has started spraying on any horizontal surface he can get near. Nothing has changed in the past month. No new pets, no new visitors, no change in environment. He doesn't have an infection. Vet says it's most likely territorial.

What can I do to stop this? My baby is crawling now and getting up to all the places the cat keeps spraying onI don't want to banish Rambo but I also don't want my baby taking a mouthful of cat pee (as everything he touches goes in his mouth). And there's only so much of watching Rambo like a hawk I can do. He's a bundle of energy and always dashing about.

They're all indoor/outdoor cats with constant access to outdoors so there are no litter trays in the house, no issues with hygiene in that respect.

As I say I don't want to banish Rambo to the garden but I'm quickly running out of patience. He's doing it constantly and on every surface he goes near. Can it be a territorial thing with the new baby despite being just fine for the first six months? And if so, what can I do about it?

Spraying can be a sign of anxiety or territorial, has a stranger cat got inside. Something has upset him, I know that's stating the obvious and not at all helpful but your baby health must come first. The cat protection online website have advice about marking and spraying.

No stranger cat/other animal has come inside or anyone he hasn't known since he first came to us. The only change is the baby, but as I say, he was completely fine and affectionate for the first 6 months (he's still affectionate with the baby now which makes me think the baby isn't the issue).

Have you tried Feliway plug ins

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/08/2018 19:55

Have you tried him on zylkene? has he got a high up bed to escape to?

Winegal · 06/08/2018 19:57

Has he been neutered? Neutered cats don't tend to spray much

Yes neutered. Yes he has a high cat tree and he likes to go in the cubby at the top. No not tried those things. I'll look into them.

If he is prone to an adverse stress reaction of cystitis you could try cystease, similar to zylkene but better at soothing bladders.
