How can you tell if there is more hairballs where that came from?

My cat hasn't been herself these last two weeks. First there was intermittent diarrhoea (with normal BM's) then she was sleeping a lot and the last two days has had no appetite. No appetite was a big deal because my cat loves eating, I think it's her favourite pastime.

Anyway, she has just coughed up a huge sausage-shaped hairball and gone back to sleep. I think the hairball was causing her the discomfort but now I'm scared that there might be more in her belly and she'll choke in her sleep.

The vet is closed where I live otherwise I'd be there instead of asking here. Can anyone give me some advice. Thanks so much x

I can't help, but I thought I'd 'bump'. Hope she is OK.

LiquoriceWheel · 04/08/2018 13:13

thank you yetanotherspartacus. Good news.
About half an hour ago she woke up, had a long drink of water and trotted off to the kitchen meowing for food. THANK GOODNESS.

I think the hairball situation has been resolved. The effort of coughing it up must have taken a lot of energy so that's why she went to sleep again. I gave her some raw mince and she ate it (first thing she's eaten in two days, poor thing). I'll take her to the vet when they open but I think we're in the clear.

Sorry for freaking out before, I get so silly when it comes to my cat :)

You might want to think about the occasional bit of anti-hairball food, or treats, going forwards.

Fingers crossed, only 2 hairballs from my pair in over 2 years (short haired, but indoor). I use indoor cat kibble (which has some anti-hairball properties) plus about one in 4 top ups I give them specific anti-hairball kibble instead. They also occasionally have the anti-hairball Dreamies, and apparently there's some paste you can get.

Awww she's beautiful. Lots and lots of brushing should help prevent further build ups.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/08/2018 12:41

Oh how gorgeous! What a pretty Miss! Does she mind being brushed?

LiquoriceWheel · 05/08/2018 13:18

Thanks everyone Grin, I'll pass on your compliments to the lil' fluffball.

I'm definitely sticking to a daily brushing routine from now on. I've got a furminator brush, slicker brush and a bristle brush. Feeling so guilty that I slacked off :(

She quite likes being brushed but instead of lying down and relaxing she 'helps' me out by grooming herself at the same time and biting the brush.
