Not Sure It Was Such a Good Idea!

So we are currently on holiday abroad and I always get upset when leaving our cats, Archie and Angus. This year my DH thought it might help me (and my mum who is looking after them) to install one of those cameras that activates when there is movement in the kitchen so I can check they are both eating and coming home so I'm not fretting. It will also help me to reassure my mum if she hasn't seen them that they have been home for food!

But ...... it upsets me when I see them especially when they seem to be looking around for us 😢 To be fair, my mum lives next door so they often pop their head around her door although very rarely stay for more than a couple of minutes but at least she is someone they see every day so hopefully they won't feel too abandoned!

On the upside my mum is a bit poorly so it helps me keep a bit of an eye on her as well (all the time she keeps wiggling her bottom at the camera I know she's ok!)

Does anyone else use these cameras when going away?

How lovely that your DM is minding them whilst you're away, and they can be at home in their own home and then pop in to her when they want a bit of company. I'd say they're absolutely fine and having a whale of a time with your DM! Be prepared to be snubbed on your returnGrin

Yes, they are lucky to have her next door and not have to go into a cattery as they are the first cats I have had that I know wouldn't cope in a Cattery. It was lovely to see my mum giving one of them their morning treat of a little piece of wafer thin chicken this morning. It was so funny as I was watching the video as he kept going to the fridge and looking at it pleadingly. Luckily my mum noticed his pleading look and gave him some.

She was worried last night as she hadn't seen both of them but I was able to reassure her that they were both in and eating just after 1am this morning!

I still get sad though. One of them seems to be coming in and going out a lot. I'm sure he's looking for us 😢 and yes I am prepared to be snubbed for days when I'm home!

I've got one as well. It is a mixed blessing. I get worried if they don't trigger it etc but it is reassuring to see that they are ok and the cat sitter has been in.

What is this thing Ive never heard of? Is it like a nanny cam and do I need it or will it wind my cat sitter up

Toddlerteaplease · 03/08/2018 10:08

Yes it's a nanny cam. Mine is a Motorola Hubble. I think I need to dig it out and see which one of mine is puking every night.

I tell my cat sitter I've left it on and she can turn it off while she's there if not comfortable with it. I don't watch it live while she's there as I felt very uncomfortable. It takes still pictures though.

Ours is a Hive camera so we control it via an app the same way as we do our heating. Ours sends us a message on our mobile if there is movement so it’s usually a few minutes behind. This morning I popped it on live and by chance one of my cats was there so I had a one sided conversation - his ears pricked up when he heard my voice and he was looking at the camera so had sussed out where my voice was coming from. Eventually he got bored and wandered back out the catflap.

I also had a chat with my mum on it this morning which made her jump at first I must admit! I’m fine doing it with my mum but like the poster above said I would have to check if my neighbour ever fed them as wouldn’t want her to think I was checking up on her!

My cat sitter does not do much even when I’m in the flat 15 mins is the longest she’s stayed

You can talk through mine as well. Their reaction is quite funny!
