How do we stop them destroying the furniture?

Last place we lived we didn't care that much but we're about to buy a new sofa and I really don't want all corners frayed.

Had their nails clipped but one is still scratching the carpet

Scratching posts are hit and miss for cats. They need to be much taller than the cat for it to get a good stretching position. The material also needs to be quite rough for grip. Ours love a wicker clothes basket that we have.

You could get a leather sofa because cats won't bother with that. Alternatively, we have throws draped over the ends of ours where the prime scratching areas are. Cats are also shut out of that particular room when we're not there.

Sorry, meant to add - the best thing you can do is let them outside to scratch but obviously can't do that till they're settled in their new home and neutered.

I've used those strips (I use the xl size sheets) and they work, as in the cat won't scratch the area. But the cat can still scratch around the strips, also obviously since they are sticky you can't put them somewhere you sit or touch, such as the seat of a dining chair.

Wolfie, they're both female and they've never sprayed just scratched. They don't seem frustrated, actually quite relaxed. They're not scratching constantly but obviously when they do it causes damage to things.

They've never been outside as they lived in a country where you can't let your pets out to roam. It wouldn't be safe for them.

They go on the balcony but not out out. I'm not sure about letting them out here now as I don't know what they'd do/if it would be safe considering they're not used to it.

It would seem that variation is key from this post. So I'll get an array of scratching things and hopefully that will deter them. If not then maybe impulse will work Smile

I’m fed up with my cat scratching the rug. I have scratch posts and mats which she uses but the rug seems to be a favourite. I seem to buy a new one every year as they look awful. She doesn’t do it out of frustration, she sometimes seems to just enjoy it, might do it when she wakes up and stretches, also does it when being silly like if I flush the toilet, use a spray can, pick up a plastic bag, so on and so on. I’m tired of walking into the living room to find the rug shredded. She doesn’t touch furniture, just the rug.
