Fur growth after spaying

I recently rehomed a 'retired' breeding queen. I've now had her for 4 weeks and when I collected her there was no visible sign of spaying, or any vet paperwork to confirm this. Her breeder claims she was spayed at the beginning of May. Her behaviour leads me to think differently. We get a lot of bum in the air and howling, and my 2 normally very placid and laid back male cats have become very aggressive around her. Breeder is adamant she was spayed but has no proof. And I genuinely fail to believe all her fur would have grown back to full length in the space between her being spayed and me collecting her. Short of taking her to my own vet, is there any way of telling?

At two months and a bit I think it would still be slightly visible. If she has long hair then it would definitely be visible.

If she has been spayed then the vet who did it should be able to confirm it. If she can't provide the details of the vet then she is lying.

In any case, even if she has been spayed, it sounds as though something isn't right. Occasionally a bit of ovary (or something) gets left behind and so the cat still comes into heat. In which case she would need a second op to retrieve that bit.

So book her in to be spayed and tell the vet that if by any chance she has been done already then they need to look for whatever is causing her to come into heat.

If it's any help we had out two girls spayed at the end of March. Their shaved patches are completely grown out now and have been for a few weeks, although you can see the shading is not quite the same on the newly grown areas.

If your cat is an ex breeding queen she may have had a midline spay to keep her coat pristine in case she would be shown?

When Harry had his fur shaved (obviously not for spaying!) his took a few months to regrow properly so I would have expected to see some sign of it in the timeframe.

The scar should still be visible if she was spayed in May so before another operation, your vet should be able to shave her from the side and belly to look for the scar.

But yes, sounds like she is in season... Be extra careful with windows and doors, they are very determined to escape to find a mate! (And keep her indoors if she goes out otherwise, of course!)

Livid. I just messaged the breeder and asked for vet details to pass onto my vet, and have just received an essay back full of excuses, basically saying her vet is close to retiring, has no records and she doesn't even give her cats names at the vets?!???! AngryAngry

That is shocking but seems typical from a breeder (the more I hear/learn about breeders the lower my opinion goes). I would also be livid!
So she clearly hasn't had her spayed and has handed the responsibility on to you. The problem of a now not needed cat has been passed on to someone else. A vet surgery will have to keep records now way would they not. At least the cat is now with someone who will care for her properly.
Sorry I'm angry on your behalf and not ranting at you.

Our vet calls Harry by name! I'm not convinced he knows who I am!

Think I have my answer, she's calling like crazy again today and becoming aggressive which she's never normally like. More worryingly she's started flinching at any loud sound, or a raised voice. I don't think this poor girl has had a very pleasant life before coming to us Sad
