Keep cats IN the garden?

Hi All, hoping you can help!

We have 2 cats, one evil and bitey so people don't like her, but very greedy and comes in when you call her, so she's not a problem, but the other one is an ex stray and tends to go into people's houses and go missing for a couple of days. She has a collar with a "do not feed me" label, but I think people still do.

We will soon be moving, and our new house is kind of a big terrace, that fronts onto a busyish road. It has a nice big (by our standards) garden at the back, but if the cats went to the end of the row (of 3 houses) and round they could get to the road, which we don't want.

I've seen lots of products for keeping other people's cats out of gardens, but is there anything that will reliably keep them in? They both love being outside so don't want to just keep them in.

Do cat spikes work for this? I have seen some kind of fence things, but would prefer something less ugly and obtrusive.

There are lots of fence-top cat proofing options - not spikes, of course! Look up Protectapet, Sanctuary SOS, Katzekure etc. Lots of posts about them on here as well if you search.

Thanks, Katzecure might be ok. The fence ones are what I'd like to avoid really!
What's wrong with spikes?

If you're on Facebook join the group 'kitty gardens, catios, house cats and catification'. There's lots of ideas on there 😸

Spikes are a huge injury risk, not only to your cats but other cats, foxes etc.

Secure-a-cat!

had a read, and katzecure looks good, and "prettiest", but way too expensive!
I'm thinking of possibly DIY-ing something like secur-a-cat... I'm pretty handy and it wuold be really cheap.

Nice cat is really sad at the moment as she's not allowed out :( she keeps staying out for a couple of days and I'm worried we'll lose her before we move.

My husband did our cat proofing himself and saved a fortune. He's going to change the netting next year because it's sagging a little but it does the job.

Cool, do you know where the brackets came from? The only ones I've found are really wide... the "official" ones are really thin so you can hardly see them!

We’ve got the Katzecure system, expensive but it works and stops your garden from looking like a prison. Plus it needs barely any maintenance. If any poles rot you can just change a single pole rather than replacing a big section etc. and ours has been up for 6 years now any never needed a thing doing to it other than a quick spray of WD40 once a year.

I had a look at cat enclosures and they were far too expensive. So instead I went on Ebay and bought a nice big dog run, it is attached to my kitchen door and the run has a door on the other end for me to come and go. Paid £300 for it and have had it for 3 years now. :)

Cliveybaby · 15/08/2018 14:07

Sorry didn't realise this was still going!
We have moved now and the cats are sad to be kept in.
I'm thinking either the netting, or one of those low-voltage electric fences especially for small animals... anyone know if you have to ask the neighbours for consent to do that?

I've just realised I didn't answer your question - DH made the brackets himself. He bought the steel strips and cut and bent them himself and then painted them black.

I'd be reluctant to have the electric fence. I know it's low voltage but I still couldn't do that to my cat.
