MIL thinks it's cruel and unnecessary. The internet is full of mixed opinions... do you trim your cat's claws and if not, why not?

Hcat gets hers tipped when getting deflea tablet and dewormed,

I put her tee shirt on, it's a child's tee shirt and I take her front paws thru it, I sit cross-legged on the bed usually and place her between my knees, with the laptop on the bed in front of us so she has a clear view

keeping the scissors out of sight and treats ready on a saucer till needed, I put on a couple of videos or usually and while her eyes are following that,

I take her from paws out one at a time from the sleeves of the tee shirt and take the very tips off as each paw is done she gets 2 treats,

she is fairly engrossed by this stage, it gives me a chance to rerun videos for back paws which are done every 3 months -

which involve tucking front paws back in the tee shirt and taking the sleeves behind her back like a restraint and clipping with a large binder clip then tucking one back paw under the tee shirt so it is fully enclosed and giving a treat, reload video and do one back paw if needed, repeat for the other side.

Give 3 treats when all over and being taken out of the tee shirt.

All done. Play a laser chasing game and watch her slide a bit on floors and spray her door mat which she sharpens on with a bit of catnip spray and let her go for it

She is as sharp as she needs for defence or preying purposes for her next trip outside but not sharp enough to injure me.

I wouldn't ask the vets to do it as every time she is there, she trys to kill them. Last time she bit me twice while the vet ran his finger down her back as sore back. The vet scruffed her as he injected her with medication she is known to be very feisty and a biter.

The tee shirt works well if needing to keep paws out of the way or I wrap her in an unwashed long sleeve tee shirt so she has security and cover her eyes with my hand so they can give meds as needed

When brushing her teeth, I hold her in the nook of my left arm as I do the right side of her teeth like a little babe in arms facing up and then reverse for the other side, we use Beaphar tooth gel which I apply a thin coating into mouth onto teeth back to front, she circulates it with her tongue over her teeth, liver flavour job done.
