Dcat at the vets - having tail amputated

Dcat (one of our semi-feral farm girls) appeared at the back door today with a load of fur missing off her tail. On closer inspection it turns out she has a really nasty wound at the base of her tail, tail was hanging limp and she appeared to have no feeling in it.

Took her straight up the vets and they are going to have to amputate it tomorrow due to infection and nerve damage. It looks like she will have next to no tail left due to the injury being so high up.

Has anyone had this happen? How did your cat cope? Have been advised she may have bladder issues after the tail goes.

Bless her she's only 4 and is a rescue so she's been through a lot - no idea how she's done it either.

I had a cat who came in one day with a terrible tail injury and had to have it amputated. She lived a perfectly normal life for the rest of her years, adapted quickly, and had no bladder problems at all. It is upsetting and I understand your worry, but she will most likely be absolutely fine.

My friends have a cat who has no tail for he same reason. He's fine.

Not tail but my cat had his back leg amputated. He is absolutely fine and far better for it than trying to fix it. Cats are very adaptable.

My nan's cat had her tail amputated because of a cancerous growth. She was absolutely fine with no bladder issues afterwards and lived happily for a good few years after. Hope your cat recovers well.

She's home! Feeing really sorry for herself and she's only got about an inch of tail left Sad

Still dopey but has had food and water and loxicom so hopefully will be comfortable - she keeps looking round then dashing off - can't work out if it's the pain or the fact she doesn't recognise her back end!
