Spitting food out when eating

We got a new cat yesterday and she’s fab but she doesn’t seem to eat ‘normally.’

She’ll lick, pick it up, chew it, drop it, rinse and repeat. She isn’t overly keen on dry food, either. Her old home free fed and I’m going to swap her to scheduled feedings but stuck to her routine as she’s new and she didn’t touch her biscuits all day. She had some mixed with her wet food, though.

She’s a Maine coon and I know they’re prone to dental issues so I’m a bit concerned it’s her teeth. She plays fine (and bites feet fine thoughHmm)

They look okay to me, no redness or discoloured teeth, and she was perfectly fine when she saw a vet a couple of weeks ago when she was spayed and checked over before we rehomed her.

I’ll be taking her myself to get registered at a local vet soon once she’s settled in but I’m worried. Is it possible she’s just a weirdo?Grin

Sounds like teeth to me. My cat has always had terrible teeth. She does this with her food when she has a bad one that needs to come out.

That’s what I thought. I’ll definitely be getting it looked at

How did you get on?

With what your describing my first thought was teeth.

Thanks for asking!

Went to the vets on Wednesday. She’s got gingivitis Sad we’ve been rubbing an antibiotic gel into her gums twice a day —by wrapping her up in a towel like a burrito so she can’t run off— and she is eating better already. If there isn’t enough improvement by her follow up appointment next week though she’s got to be tested for calcivirus Sad

I’m a bit miffed to be honest, I was told she was slightly underweight as she’d gone into heat before her spaying was done and she didn’t eat much due to being in heat. I have a sneaking suspicion it’s bevause the poor mite was in too much pain to eat.

Poor little thing!

Glad you found out and she's getting the right treatment.
