Does anyone put suncream on their cat?!

Got talking to a lady who volunteers for cats protection and was telling her about my cat, she warned I should be putting suncream on his nose as it's pink and ears too if they are (his are black and v fluffy so no issue there). I get theory that it could get burnt but never heard of anyone doing this, does anyone on here? I did try and he wasn't having any of it!

Well I know people who do it to pigs , horses and dogs so yes I’d say sensible .

Use something aimed at kids - fragrance free etc

Foggymist · 28/06/2018 23:30

I have heard of putting it on white cats ears and nose before, but not cats in general.

HirplesWithHaggis · 28/06/2018 23:31

I have a cat with white ears and wondered if I should suncream him, but he wasn't impressed at the idea. He spends most of the day indoors in this heat, but his ears do look a little pinker than usual. Sad

wobblercat · 28/06/2018 23:32

Yes I used my DSs factor 50 baby stuff, he's got a white muzzle so his nose is pink so this lady said I should do it every day as skin cancer was common. Maybe I'll have to just get him used to it while the weather is like this!

My lovely cat is mostly white and is a rescue. She had to have her ears cut down because of skin cancer. She also has had a lump removed from her belly.

She's an indoor cat now but if she went out of put cream on her ears.

Scribblegirl · 28/06/2018 23:35

Percy is B+W but mostly black so he’s been hiding inside the best part of today to avoid overheating! Would consider it if he was out more but knowing him he’d flip at the prospect so it wouldn’t be worth it...

ButtonMoonLoon · 28/06/2018 23:38

I have a white cat and was told by the vets that they are more vulnerable to do in cancer. Black marks on their outer ears is the sign yo watch out for. I put sun cream on her ears every day.

Chippednailpolish · 28/06/2018 23:39

I put suncream on my dog every day in the summer - very short fur, especially around his nose and ears. I use kids factor 50 sprayable stuff

Allergictoironing · 29/06/2018 08:53

My cousin inherited a couple of fully outdoor cats when she bought a farm. One of them was mostly white and had cancerous tips to her ears that needed to be removed by the vet. I went down right after they moved in so saw them before she had them removed, really not pleasant!

hugoagogo · 29/06/2018 08:57

Yes sometimes, I know I should be more diligent about it, but it makes her so miserable.Sad
she does tend to stay in during the heat of the day, so is not as stupid as she looks.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/06/2018 10:20

Yes. We had a white cat so house to put it on his ears. He wasn't keen but tolerated it.

OlennasWimple · 29/06/2018 22:06

Yes, we put baby suncream (factor 50, unscented stuff) on his ears when he lets us

Mum2jenny · 29/06/2018 22:10

My dds dog needs suncream as she hadn't any hair on her underside, so it's not unreasonable to do it imo

Halfblindbunny · 29/06/2018 22:14

I put kids factor 50 on my white cats ears even though she is an indoor cat as she still sits in the sun. Sometimes if she has managed to rub it off or it's a particularly hot day she still gets little black scabs on the tips of her ears.

BackToTheFuschia7 · 29/06/2018 22:18

Please do use suncream on them. It’s absolutely essential. Even house cats with white faces need it due to their love of sunbathing.

I was doing this 25 years ago to the Persians. They weren’t keen but it was bright green zinc oxide.

Judydreamsofhorses · 30/06/2018 22:36

We have a pure white cat, who loves the sun, so I use Factor 50 in a spray bottle on her. She actually hates me just now, tbh, and she also looks really grotty as she’s managed to get it from her ears onto the top of her head. I worry about her nose, but she licks it straight off.

Mayflymaynot · 02/07/2018 19:16

I have kidnapped my neighbour's cat. Its a gorgoeous elderly pedigree cat who is thrown out of the house all day long in blistering heat. The cat turned up on my doorstep today. She has terribly sunburned ears, weeping eyes, fur loss, lots of sores in her legs poss from heat of tarmac where she lies all day, cant walk on paws without difficulty as they are hurting her. Not taking to vets as they will say euthanise im sure as she is about 18. She has a beautiful loving nature. Ive fed her by hand bits of fish, ham, cat food in jelly and water plus water and milk mixed. Ive bathed her wounds, made her a comfy bed and put savoln on her poor ears. Makes me so sad some people treat poor animals so awfully.

PlateOfBiscuits · 02/07/2018 19:22

I know a white cat who lost the tips of his ears to sunburn. So I guess it is a thing!

BackToTheFuschia7 · 02/07/2018 19:23

May Sad

Well done for taking her in. Thank you for caring for her. It’s best not to give too much fish or ham (fine as an occasional treat), and most cats are lactose intolerant so the milk may give her an upset tummy.

If you want to take her to the Vets (totally understand if you don’t) then they can’t force euthanasia. Hope she is a lot more comfortable and happy soon.

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/07/2018 19:23

That’s terrible, poor cat. My dm did similar, cat put out in minus zero and with a dog bite wound on its leg. They’d been banned from keeping animals by the rspca.

She kept it too.

Mayflymaynot · 02/07/2018 19:34

Thanks for words of support all. I always go with gut feeling and when i see a poor animal on my doorstep looking ravaged i can't not take action. She has had a wee on litter tray and despite her sore paws managed to have a play in adjacent toilet water with paws. Lid is now down. Maybe cold bog water soothed them. Not terribly hygienic however.

Yes I know milk isnt ideal. Just wanted to get fluids into her asap die to her heat exhaustion so I tempted her with semi skimmed milk. She has only had few bites of fish and ham and a quarter of sachet if chunks in jelly. My OH is cat mad and he will give ger a load of fuss when he gets home too. Poor kitty. My kids giving her liads of fuss and love and cuddles. Great to see mumsnet so compassionate!! 😊
