long car and ferry trip advice

We are moving and DCats are facing a 4hour drive, 4 hours on ferry and another 3 hours in the car on the other side. They are elderly (13yrs) and wondering how to make it easier for them?
They have separate travel boxes, but wondering if I should book a kennel on the ferry to get them out of car, or would a dog smelling strange box be worse!! Any ideas?

Are there any pet rooms available for a 4 hour trip? When I've done a ferry crossing of 24 hours, I booked a pet room and cats were perfectly happy in there? You'll need to check if the car deck will be cool enough for them whilst they're in the car. If so, they should be fine left in there. When I've left mine in the car, (before cats were allowed in rooms), I let them out of their travel boxes, so that they could roam around in the car. If you do this, make sure the car is definitley locked, so that no one opens it and cats escape. And when you go back to the car make sure that you can see them before you open the doors. Also, disarm your alarm, if possisle, as so many alarms go off during the crossing.

No pet cabins unfortunately, just a kennels area which may well be full of dogs. Which might be stressful. But leaving them in car could be too hot. Slightly worried about them peeing all over the car if they were loose. To punish me for moving them!

You can leave litter trays on the car seats.
