Kitten with sensitive tummy

Hi all, same kitten similar issue.
My kitten is now ten weeks old and when he came to me he was on whiskas and go-cat. When I started to add Felix he got blood in his poo. Straight away I went back to whiskas only, and also gave him chicken and he had a couple of chicken and rice meals from the vet. It's been a week and the poor thing still has blood in his poo. The vet checked him over and decided it's an inflamed colon, he sometimes has no blood and sometimes has very obvious drops, and his poop is still soft. He can't have pro-kolin cause it gave him the runs, amazingly.
He has three days of de worming with panacur and that did seem to help, but now he's not on it anymore it seems to have started again.

I'm starting to add Felix again because even without it, his poo has been soft, and I'm starting to think it's the whiskas after all (a similar thing happened to my older cat and my cousin's kitten), and I'm going to get him some more chicken and royal canin sensitive.

Ha anyone got any further advice? While I would normally be straight to the vets, they aren't concerned at all because he's bright and happy and healthy, and the next port of call for him anyway would be a poo analysis as they don't want to give him any antibiotics for some reason. So any ideas what I can do at home for now?

Has the vet suggested a prescription food for him? My old cat sometimes had blood in his poo. He did have kidney problems and a condition called megacolon, not suggesting yours has these, but he was on a renal dried food for the rest of his life and I imagine this was good for him.

Maybe there's a prescription food that could help your puss?

Thekitten · 27/06/2018 10:22

Thank you @wantobeme
Yes the emergency vet recommended royal canin chicken and rice, but my normal vet sells Hills prescription ID food, which is what the nurse recommended. I don't know which is best in this situation.

However I'm going to pick up one of them on Saturday (unfortunately that's the earliest I can get there and ordering online it won't get to be til then anyway) and I've him his food with chicken in the meantime.
I did speak to them about giving more panacur and they said no. It's very reassuring that the vets aren't concerned about the blood to be honest! And good that the food helped your kitty.

I don't want to jinx it, but we've had two blood free poos since last night (one last night and one this morning). Today is day three of the gradual change to Felix, and nothing bad seems to be happening, so I've upped it to 1/3 Felix, 2/3 whiskas with a bit of chicken.

Keep your fingers crossed!

I jinxed it :( gonna talk to the vet tomorrow, but will persist with changing his food and hope his tummy can cope with it... but will get some of the prescription food just in case. There's no diarrhoea, it's just blood so starting to think this is purely food related and not a parasite (could be an infection though). I'm not really worried anymore, just annoyed that we can't seem to shift it.

As long as your vet is happy enough, you shouldn't worry. Hopefully, you'll get a diagnoses though.

dementedpixie · 30/06/2018 13:13

I'd look for grain free food with a higher meat content than whiskas and Felix. The royal canin and hills aren't that great for what you pay for them tbh. Try pets at home or zooplus for grain free food

Thekitten · 30/06/2018 15:23

Thank you both. I had to take him to the vet this morning because he had diarrhoea :( was at my wit's end so called and turned up XD the vet still isn't too concerned however it shouldn't have gone on this long so he's on a bland diet now, and I've got a pot to take a sample if it doesn't settle. I've heard Hills and Royal Canin aren't very good for what you pay, but hopefully it's just a temporary measure until his tummy settles and then will see where to go from there. He's currently curled up next to me :3

Runny poo last night, but a mostly solid poo this morning, both with no blood!! I'm still going to take a sample to the vet to rule anything out because we've been through this before, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we've turned a corner..!

Lab results not back til Friday, he's having a mix of runny and solid poo. Sometimes with blood. It just feels like it's never going to end :(

My adult cat has chronic colitis (blood in his poo for no other reason than inflamed bowel caused by a sensitivity to certain types of food). I had to try loads of different types of food until I found the right one. I adopted him as an adult just under a year ago and this started shortly after we got him - it took ages to find something he would eat. He is a proper fussy bugger, will only eat wet food for a short period of time, but it was the wet food we were feeding him that was causing it, then move on to a different type of wet food and would only lick the gravy or jelly off and just leave the meat etc...

Eventually found a dry food that was designed for this exact kind of issue and he eats it all the time, but looks like it might be causing another issue with urinary crystals. Just can't win. I think there must be a designed mix out there which works and doesn't cause issues.

Probably best to talk to your vet to find it though. But we wouldn't haven't them any other way, would we? Grin

Thekitten · 04/07/2018 13:00

Thank you @inappropriategavels. It's good to hear from someone with similar issues XD I'm waiting for the lab results to come back, and then if all clear, gonna grab a worming tablet anyway and have my eye on some food from zooplus to try him on. I've only had him a few weeks and he's costing me a fortune!
Sorry your cat now has urinary crystals D: hopefully you and your vet can find the right thing for him to be on!
What is he on at the moment?

InappropriateGavels · 04/07/2018 13:37

@Thekitten - shall find out tomorrow for sure to rule out everything else. He's very happy in himself otherwise, still eating, still running around chasing butterflies and shadows, still affectionate, not having any other issues, it's all a bit sudden so we'll see how it goes.

Hope you find the right thing for your kitten. Get your kitten used to tablets too, don't end up like my cat, refusing to take tablets and spending even more on liquid formulas for everything from worming, to flea treatments, to anti-biotics! Bitiba is another website I've used for fairly decent priced bulk food buys as well...when he'll eat it Envy

Thekitten · 04/07/2018 15:05

@inappropriategavels - I hope you get some answers tomorrow. How frustrating :(
That's the thing, my kitten is very happy and well in and of himself, you wouldn't know anything was wrong at all. If he was pooping outside then I'd be none the wiser XD
Thank you, I'll do my best. He was wormed a couple of weeks ago, I do wonder how much of this is the worming and advocate taking effect too, as it all started after that.
Aww your poor cat! My ex's cat was like this too, we had to take him to the vet just to get him wormed. Fat cat is not a problem despite being far more aggressive.

Want2beme · 04/07/2018 15:35

Inappropriate, just wondering if he drinks water? I think he should be fine on dried food if he drinks water.

Kitten, hope things improve very soon.

Thekitten · 08/07/2018 09:02

Thank you @want2beme
I've got most of the results back from the vets and it's all negative so far. He's still having the runs so I'm trying him on pumpkin puree, half a teaspoon or less with each meal. I gave him some last night at about 10, and he's only just had a poo, and it was normal. So here's hoping this will help.

Also just for general knowledge, my vets said that the heat is causing diarrhoea in a lot of pets at the moment, so it could just be that! Here's hoping all our kitties are ok!

OP posts:
InappropriateGavels · 10/07/2018 11:22

@Thekitten - So, took him to the vet, and he was given some steriods and antibiotics as an injection, within 24 hours they didn't seem to have made any difference to his urine, but then I don't know if it would have worked that quickly. Being a shift worker it makes it a bit difficult to monitor. I've been told to get a urine sample from him to make some more checks Hmm That'll be fun. The vet said that he wasn't showing any discomfort in his kidneys so she didn't really have any concerns.

Hope your kitten is feeling better now!

Want2beme - yeah he drinks water, just bought him a water fountain which he has finally got used to and I keep a bowl of water upstairs for him as well during the night.

Thekitten · 10/07/2018 12:45

@inappropriategavels did they give you the special litter with the pipette and container? Good luck! I had to do it for my Leyla once and she completely ignored it! But she managed to get better on her own, weirdly. Hopefully the meds are working on your dcat now.

I don't want to do a proper update on my kitten just yet just in case it jinxes things... XD (make of that what you will..!)

Mindchilder · 10/07/2018 12:55

My cat can't eat any of the cheaper foods that have wheat and sugar in them! I have to get food with a high meat content, she's fine on Applaws.

Thekitten · 11/07/2018 11:03

@mindchilder that's good to know she's ok on Applaws. I think my kitten may well be allergic or intolerant to something in Felix as he got his paws on his big sisters food last night. I thought he'd be ok to try a bit, but he had the runs with blood again this morning.
All his lab results were negative, so now just need to find the right food!

OP posts:
Mindchilder · 11/07/2018 22:19

I've read that wheat intolerance isn't uncommon in cats as obviously they aren't evolved to eat it. Wiskas, felix etc all contain wheat for some reason.

Thekitten · 12/07/2018 07:30

I think they use it to bulk it out. But like cats are lactose intolerant so they don't put lactose in food, why do they not do the same for wheat? I don't get it.
I've ordered some hypo allergenic food from pets and home and going to start transitioning him over to it on Saturday. Wish me luck!

PS. The pumpkin has been a godsend!
