Please tell me your litter tray cleaning routine

We have indoor cats for their safety (a cat poisoner lives somewhere behind us), so I'm interested in what other indoor cat people's routine is?

I'm also trying to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

We pick poo out daily and change the litter every couple of days. We use catsan non clumping litter because we've found that's the only one that at doesn't stink. We tried the wood pellet one a few years ago but it seems to disintegrate and get everywhere.

Flushing cat poo down the loo isn't on is it? From an environmental point of view? Or is it okay with the paper based pellets? We haven't tried either.

I'm also interested in how you clean the actual tray? We use wipes at the moment which isn't ideal environmentally either.

Sorry, not the most pleasant thread!

I use catsan too. My cats will not go near the box with paper pellets or wood pellets.

I clean my tray with a bleach spray and warm water.

I would assume its ok to flush cat poo as surely they would not invent flushable 'cat litter' if it wasn't.4

Lonecatwithkitten · 21/06/2018 13:15

Flushable litter is not really flushable and all litter and faeces should be bagged ( I use biodegrable dog poo bags) in the black bin. Using bleach to clean a litter tray makes it smell like another cat has used it, so washing up liquid is better.

OutingMyDog · 21/06/2018 13:25

Thank you both.

Hi do you wipe and dry your trays? If you use a cloth do you reuse it or throw it away?

How often do you clean the tray or the poo out?

PiggeryPorcombe · 21/06/2018 13:25

Poo goes in poo bags in outside bin along with used litter.

Tray cleaned with hot soapy water using kitchen roll to wipe after.

PiggeryPorcombe · 21/06/2018 13:27

Poo removed straight away obviously.

Tray cleaned whenever it smells or is noticeably well-weed in. Our tray is rarely used though as cat prefers to poo in the great outdoors.

OutingMyDog · 21/06/2018 13:28

Thank you. Can I ask where you clean it with hot soapy water?

In the garden by the outside tap. I generally swill it out with cold water first.

Toddlerteaplease · 21/06/2018 15:55

Intersand classic. Scooped once a day and full change monthly. 1 large covered box used by two indoor cats. No smell at all!

EachandEveryone · 21/06/2018 15:57

Ive got friends who do it in the shower. Like me they have recycable liners that come with the tray

Toddlerteaplease · 21/06/2018 16:14

I do mine in the shower it's really easy.

crimsonlake · 21/06/2018 16:21

How is it hygienic cleaning a litter tray in the shower, or am I missing something?

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 21/06/2018 16:28

I use Catsan as just like you said, it’s the only one that does keeps smells under control. Daily poo lumps go down the toilet and because I have two trays, one upstairs and one downstairs (both in a toilet room I might add) and we use the Catsan that comes with it’s own liner bag, I just take the liner and wee filled litter out when the tray needs a complete change (around a week/10 days depending on if the weather is nice and kitty is going outside or not)
Ve never even considered getting rid of poo anywhere other than down the loo.

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 21/06/2018 16:29

Oh and if the tray does need a wash, it does happen even with liners, outside tap.

wejammin · 21/06/2018 16:31

We use cats best oko plus. Poo and wee clumps both go down the toilet.

Litter is topped up daily after scooping and emptied/refilled completely monthly. Cleaned in the shower with very hot water and a scrubbing brush only - she won't go near it if I use soap.

mistermagpie · 21/06/2018 16:34

I'm probably a bit overzealous based on this thread! Poos are removed immediately (within reason, obviously not when I'm out) and the full litter changed every day. We used wood pellets. I just wipe the tray with an antibac wipe daily and wash properly maybe every week.

We've got two cats and two litter trays but they only ever seem to go in one!

GfordMum101 · 21/06/2018 16:35

DO NOT PUT CAT POO DOWN YOUR TOILET !!!!!! Why, why, why, would you do that.
Toxoplasmosis infects marine mammals and otters. ... litter manufacturers warn on their packaging not to flush feces or litter down the toilet. Please don't do it, just bag it and bin it.
Bear in mind also that in many regions grey water is recycled many times over......bleuch.
I pick poo out every day, change the whole litter every week, put it all in the bin, and wash out in garden with a bit of bleach and air dry.

Beaverhausen · 21/06/2018 16:35

I use the woodchip litter, I do change their tray every day but only need to use one cup of the wood chip as it expands. Costs me £6 for a 30l bag from B&M.

I remove the poopies and put the left overs in my garden and food recycling bin or you can pour it down your toilet but by putting it in the bin, is a lot more environmentally friendly and gets recycled.

Beaverhausen · 21/06/2018 16:36

I do give the litter tray a good wipe after every change with the dettol spray, I like the apple one it makes it smell nice. :)

mistermagpie · 21/06/2018 16:37

It would never occur to me to put the poo down the toilet, ours is bagged and put in the wheelie bin. I treat it the same as nappies (which I have two kids in, so a bin full of shit unfortunately...).

I can't believe that people aren't fully changing the tray more than once a week. My cats wouldn't use it if it wasn't changed daily, but then again they don't go outside so maybe that's why.

Footofthestairs · 21/06/2018 16:39

2 cats, one xl uncovered tray, we also use Catsan with the liners. Scooped daily as soon as a poo is noticed, and changed completely twice a week. Tray is washed out with dettol pure kitchen cleaner every couple of weeks and dried with kitchen roll before litter goes in. Litter goes in the bin in carrier bags, poo that's scooped goes down the loo.

SporkInTheToaster · 21/06/2018 16:45

I have a tray but the boys only use it in extremis. It is probably used once a fortnight.

‘Routine’ is,

• Tip the lot into a plastic pedal bin liner (not carrier bag because of the little holes)
• Wipe out the tray with a couple of supermarket own brand antibac household wipes (chuck in same pedal bin liner)
• Leave to air dry
• Re line with a couple of sheets of newspaper (we get the free paper shoved through the door every week, it only ever gets used for these sorts of tasks).
• Chuck a couple of scoops of biodegradable clumping litter on top (we’re using Greenwood’s natural at the mo).

I dare say that my routine is not particularly environmentally kosher but it only happens once/twice a month and I don’t use wipes anywhere else in the house, so...

theunsure · 21/06/2018 16:48

Scooped poo down the loo, I check it at least 3 times a day (morning, when I get home, just before bed).
I change litter twice a week. Tray gets rinsed under outside tap each time. It gets a proper clean with cat safe disinfectant roughly monthly. I am too lazy to dry it usually.

We use Catsan, one huge lidded tray that tales 10l litter each time. We have 3 cats, but only one is indoor. In summer the tray stays very clean, in winter though it does need a clean more often.
It has a carbon filter in the lid which keeps the smell away.
I bag the used litter which goes in the bin.

Oliversmumsarmy · 21/06/2018 16:52

We have several litter trays.

I change litter every couple of days. I change trays. I take the empty trays out side and hose them down and leave them filled with water. Then take the ones that have outside in.
Make sure they are dry (kitchen towel) then fill with litter.

I got a strawberry smelling litter once it was fantastic. However can't find it any more

Ollivander84 · 21/06/2018 17:13

I treat like I'm mucking a horse out Grin
Scoop out poo and wee clumps, into a nappy sack and bin
I rarely wash the full thing out as he gets all suspicious Confused but TBH he has such a massive layer of litter that the bottom is clean, just dusty

0range99 · 21/06/2018 17:19

Two cats, two litter trays side by side in a cupboard, they rarely go outside - they even scratch the door to come in to use their litter tray rather than going out Hmm.

I use silica cat litter as it dries the poo out.

Poo scooped daily and put in the bin.

Whole tray emptied every 5 days or so into a bin liner, squirt it with Method anti back and wipe clean / dry with toilet roll which goes down the loo (no litter obviously).

Every month or so I give it a good clean by filling it with hot water and bleach outside, scrubbing it with a loo brush and then rinsing with outside tap.
