Reporting a breeder?

Hi all. Some of you may remember this thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/the_litter_tray/2771577-Breeder-sold-us-a-very-sick-cat which I posted under another name.
Sadly, the cat had to put down last week after nearly two years and thousands and thousands of pounds worth of veterinary treatment. His digestive issues were worsening and he had developed septic wounds and diabetes from long term steroid use. My mum is beside herself.

I'm trying to report the breeder who claims to be a member of TICA, GCCF and FIFE. Details show she was suspended from the GCCF in 2015 for selling a sick kitten and remains suspended for non-payment of fines levied. My mum's cat sired a kitten who is also having digestive issues. I've written to all three organisations to clarify if the breeder is actually a member but had no reply from any of them.

Is there anything I can do? I'm so angry that she keeps breeding these cats. She is dishonest and irresponsible and the cats and owners suffer most. My poor mum is in pieces.

No advice. But my Persians were rescued from a kitten farm in awful condition. The conditions they were kept in has, according to the cardiologist contributed to One if them's cardiomyopathy. As it's hereditary probably most of her kittens have it.
I asked the rescue if they had reported the breeder to the RSPCA but she just laughed and said they are useless. (My pair were part of the second group rescued in as many years)
I'd love to take it further but have no idea how to or even who the breeder was.

It's awful isn't it, Toddlertea ? When my mum went to pick up this cat (retired stud) she said the house was full of them (cats and kittens) - mainly this breed but she was also breeding snowshoes and orientals. Thirty odd cats in the house. The noise!

What annoys me is that when my mum contacted her a couple of weeks after she got the cat home the breeder told her that he'd never been sick before, or showed signs of IBS. Vet said that wasn't possible. It's horrible that she gets away with it, but you're right, RSPCA won't do anything if no signs of actual cruelty. I was hoping at least to get her reconsidered for the accreditations she claims to have - I've checked the membership details and she isn't actively a member of any of them and is banned from one (!) but they haven't responded to me. I'm at a loss.

HOpe your cats are alright now, obvs!

They are both ok now. Apart from the heart disease. I'm glad they were got out of that situation. It was so bad that the lady who collected them can barely talk about it. Abs when there was a chance that they he stud cat would be surrendered to the rescue. She wouldn't let me go along for moral support, as seeing where my princesses lived would have been too upsetting.

I remember your thread. So sorry your mum has lost her boy so young. I remember being disgusted by the breeder at the time. I would contact the RSPCA to see what they can do. They are the only animal welfare organisation able to get involved but sadly on limited resources
Cats Protection and others don't have powers to investigate.
To my mind the breeder isn't acting in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act but whether that can priven is another matter. Would the vet be able to assist with where to go?

I really don't know but that's awful, he was such a beautiful kitty

I'd contact a Siamese/Oriental Cat association for advice if you haven't already. There's one called OCA I think but Google should be your friend. I'm very sorry for your mum and her poor boy.

BustyDeLaGhetto · 12/06/2018 22:40

Thanks all, he was very well looked after and much loved in the time she had him. Just sad he was so ill.

isadora I think I'll contact the siamese cat association just to give them a heads up - I don't think the RSPCA will do anything as there isn't definitive cruelty if you see what I mean. I just don't want this to happen anyone else.

Thanks for your kind words, LanguidLobster he was a looker. (Even though he had weirdly tiny legs for a siamese.)

Vino I may see if I can look at the welfare act. I just want to see her step up her responsibility to these animals - she describes herself as a hobby breeder and attends a lot of shows so I think she's quite well known. She must be making a fortune!

Sorry about the loss of your Mum's cat OP. What breed was he? I would get in touch with the GCCF affiliated breed club, they will want to know to avoid health issues with their lines moving forward. If the breeder has been suspended from the GCCF they are probably already aware of them but may not know that they are still actively breeding.

First time posting on here really could use some support. I am quite upset. Took my 2 month old kitten for her first vet check up today. Upon enquiring about my kitten the breeder told me she was healthy and that she had been flead and wormed. She said she was 8 weeks old which she is not (She is 2 months and 10 days) immediately upon arrival without any chat she pulled up with her husband in an expensive Jaguar, took the money from me handed her over and left. She did not check up on the kitten or contact me again at all. I had paid £300 on ammentities she needed this month before our first vet appointment to ensure her safety and wellbeing. I wanted to make sure she had all of her vaccines done before I even thought about letting her out where she could catch FIV, Cat Flu etc.

I live alone with no other cats and the kitten has never been outside in contact with other cats.
I noticed this week that she was having a runny nose and sneezing, so I asked the vet what could be the cause? She confirmed that it is cat flu.

She said to bring her back in a week if the sneezing or runny nose continues to get worse.

I was angry. I had questions as to how she contracted the virus. The reason I wanted to get her vaccines done ASAP was to avoid any long term complications. She may now face a lifetime of needing antibiotics and special care.

I contacted the breeder telling her what the vet had told me and I explained the situation to find out the dates of the vaccines. She had no remorse or interest for the fact the cat is now infected. After 10 minutes of talking I knew she lied about having her Mother cat vaccinated. None of her cats are vaccinated up to date. She put the phone down on me and said "I need to drive now"

I asked for advice from the r/catadvice on reddit and just got attacked. For what? Taking a cat in and caring for it? Am I the devil now for taking a cat from a breeder?
My cat would of needed a home regardless of where I got her from! Wish people were more supportive of eachother maybe I've been posting in the wrong places

Has anyone else had experience with cat flu?

I may be way off here, but how about trying trading standards? I know they go after builders & the like who claim to have accreditation they don't have. I know she calls herself a "hobby breeder", but if she's breeding more than a couple of litters a year then there could be tax implications too...

Lonecatwithkitten · 01/07/2021 20:07

Regardless of whether she is a hobby breeder if she sold a sick kitten and is persisting in breeding sick kittens then trading standards maybe interested.
