This Poor Stray Kitty

We have had a stray cat who has visited our garden on and off for a couple of years and it is often in a terrible state. My cats are terrified of it but the poor thing is always fighting and is being picked on by a lot of neighbouring cats. I often don't see it for weeks on end but when I do I always try to feed it and have gradually been trying to gain its trust as I am more than happy to feed the poor baby each day.

Today the poor thing turned up in my garden around 6ish. I went out in the garden and put down a sachet of food and whilst it was eating I managed to stroke it gently but my God the poor thing is in an awful state. It has large matts of fur hanging off in some places and looks like it's been shaved in others, although I do wonder if it has actually been ripping the mats out itself. It also appears to have an injury near its ear which looks painful. The poor baby needs help. I am going to e-mail the local rescue where I got my two cats from to see if they can help and advise. I would try and catch it and take it to the vet but I only see it during the evenings or weekends and I don't want to catch it and leave it in a carrier for a long period of time - once caught it needs to be taken somewhere straightaway.

I also noticed today that it seems to have a split in its ear and wonder if this could be a sign it has already been caught and neutered previously. I've attached a photo showing the nick and wondered if the @catneuturer was around she could take a look and see what she thinks. You should be able to see it if you enlarge the photo of just his/hers face.

@Weeds - yes that's the plan. I have a cat carrier strategically placed since yesterday with towels inside and one over the top to make it comfy in the garden where he comes to visit. My plan is to try to gain his trust a little so at some point I can get him in it or near enough that I can give him a bit of a tap on the bottom and in he will go. I don't want to scruff him because of the nasty wound near his ear.

Ask CPL if you can borrow a trip plate trap. I've done that several times for strays and a much easier way of catching them

Has he been neutered?

Ginandtonic4all · 14/06/2018 06:27

Hey there. I live just a few miles from Ashford too. And am happy to help in anyway I can.

I have to rescue cats but they are quite robust so could cope with another one in a room. Not long term as 2 is enough though.

Well Mr Stray was here when I woke up this morning which is the first time he's done that which is great news. DH is a bit cross though as he's poo'd in the middle of our lawn! So I took out his breakfast (Mr Stray's not DH's!) and he's eaten that and I had another gentle stroke. I got a bit over confident though and made a grab for him but missed and he shot off like a bat out of hell. I was so cross with myself and worried he wouldn't trust me again but he's come back and has settled at the end of the garden. His ear is looking a little better today.

@Gatekeeper I can't tell if it's been neutered. If it's a female it's definitely been spayed as there have been no kittens over the years that I have been seeing it. He/she has quite a fluffy tail so it's hard to tell if he has any balls! I did try to gently lift his tail this morning but he was having none of it and took a swipe. I will speak to the CP lady to see about a trap - thanks for the suggestion.

@Ginandtonic4all - that's so kind of you, thank you. I will let you know if I'm stuck.

How's things with Mr Stray Ice?

Icequeen01 · 21/06/2018 18:47

Well we were doing well @Gatekeeper and Mr Stray was appearing each morning and evening. I was out one evening and asked DH to feed him. DH decided to try putting the food in the carrier and Mr Stray apparently went all the way in. When DH went to close the door Mr Stray got wind of what was happening and bolted (backwards) out of the carrier.

I was worried that DH had undone all my good work but Mr Stray appeared again 2 days later and happily ate his dinner. I gave him a little stroke (as I have done before) but this time he really went for me and I ended up with quite a deep scratch on the palm of my hand. When I shot back in surprise Mr Stray took off and I haven't seen him for 3 days. I'm hoping he will reappear soon and I can try to gain his trust again.

I will not give up!!

The carrier thing happened with me and my stray boy. I didn't see him for a few days after that, but he has returned and I'm not sure if I can get him back in the carrier again so soon. The thing is, I want him sorted and settled before the winter arrives.

Icequeen01 · 21/06/2018 22:19

It's so frustrating isn't it Want2beme - I don't think this poor car would survive another winter outside to be honest so I want to catch him/her and get him checked for a microchip. If he doesn't have one I am still hoping the CP will take him in. I think Mr Stray is quite old judging by the way he walks.
