My cat is sneezing

She's 13. Should I be worried? She's happy, eating and drinking fine. A bit lethargic though.

Can cats have hayfever? Everyone round here is sneezing.

LilacIris · 07/06/2018 22:37

Could she have anything stuck up her nose? One of my cats had to have a minor op to remove a blade of grass that had become stuck in her nose after she had vomited up a hairball.

Otherwise, has she come into contact with a cat with flu (even if she is vaccinated)?

Lobsterquadrille2 · 07/06/2018 22:38

Didn't think of that! DD was back from university and vacuuming everything- I wondered if it could be that as well. Then I googled cat flu ...she's so dear to us.

Should I take her to a vet? I've never heard her sneeze before.

I suppose she could have something up her nose as she's out all day. Didn't think of that either but I suppose that's a form of hay fever anyway. DD said she seemed more tired and grumpy when she was at home, but I suppose 13 is getting on? She seems so kittenish though. I would be devastated if anything happened to her and DD would never forgive me!

I'd take her to the vet. My oldie had some ups and downs - he lived to be 18 - I never regretted the times I got him checked over. The vet always told me to trust your instinct. If you think she's not herself, take her in.

WatchoutDSisdriving · 07/06/2018 23:51

Sneezing or coughing? They sound very similar.

Our cat was coughing and the vet thought it was something stuck and arranged to sedate him the next day to look properly. She then cleaned the scales down before her next patient and realised he had worms. We had embarrassingly lapsed with the working tablets by a few months.

Worms is apparently a common cause of a cough. Is your cat wormed? If not please do that ASAP. One working and a few days later our cat stopped coughing.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 08/06/2018 12:34

Thank you. Yes, she is wormed regularly and hasn't sneezed or coughed once today so maybe it was dust or hay fever.

Mine has been sneezing a fair bit recently. She's long haired and moulting, and keeps snorting up her own discarded hair. You haven't lived until you've been woken at 5am by a shower of cat snot, I can tell you.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/06/2018 16:21

Too right! Or had eye snot wiped up your arm!

Weedsnseeds1 · 08/06/2018 22:07

Is it a flurry of sneezes, then nothing? Or regular sneezing.
Mine sneezes when he's been grubbing around somewhere dusty, but it's every so often, not a regular thing.
His sneeze sounds like one of those squeaky dog toys, incredibly high pitched. No mistaking it for a coughSmile

I actually think it was DD coming back from university and vacuuming everything (she's a bit of a clean freak). Cordelia seems absolutely fine now, no sneezing or coughing, thankfully. I was about to take her to the vet but she really doesn't seem unwell. Thank you for your replies Smile
