Introducing new cats

Hiya,

Looking for a bit of advice please. We got a new cat last Tuesday. So it's only been a week very early days. Our new cat has been kept in a safe room but they've been desperate to meet! It's been really difficult to keep them apart as one either tries to run in or new one runs out. They're both very friendly. Our existing cat is quite timid and used to being the only cat in the house.

So we decided to let them out together (supervised) for a short period of time yesterday. First meeting went well, a little hissing and growling from our old cat but nothing major. Repeated again today. The problem is, the new cat follows existing cat around and goes wide eyed and tries to run at or pounce on him. He's trying to play/test the water I think.

Bit more hissing today and a couple of times batting each other and standing on back legs. They just constantly follow each other around! Then new cat pounced on him and they both swiped at each other.

I have separated them. I'm guessing it's just too much too soon? Should we go back to square one and keep them separate for a longer and continue scent swapping etc and then try again in a couple of weeks?

I've just bought a couple of Feliway plug ins.

What do you suggest? Please bear in mind that I'm new to this and want to get it right! X

Way too much too soon. Watch smoothie being introduced to milkshake on YouTube. It can take weeks.
