Getting a new cat, how many is too many?

Today I viewed and placed a deposit on a cat. She will become my third cat and I've been considering this for a while before making my decision. Except now its done and I'll be collecting my new addition in a few weeks I'm suddenly panicking I've made an awful mistake.
I'm so worried about doing the new kitten thing again.
I have the time, space and money to care for this animal properly I just don't know why I'm suddenly anxious about it all.
It doesn't help that people make constant jokes about me having enough animals for a zoo ( 2 budgies, a parakeet, and a rabbit)

Not sure the reasoning for this post. Just need to get it out there and be told this isn't the worst thing in the world. Or maybe it is!

The worst thing I can see about this is you buying a kitten rather than rescuing one.

NameChanger22 · 30/05/2018 19:36

I think one cat is too many cats. I have one cat. I really would prefer new sofas instead. She eats, poos and scratches too much.

.... I love her really.

Aph413 · 30/05/2018 19:36

It is a rescue. I just had to leave a deposit with them before collecting.

If you have the time, space and experience, three cats is not excessive. I know a few people with seven or more cats, all happy and well cared for.

What sort of cat is she, out of pure nosiness?

Beaverhausen · 30/05/2018 19:37

I have 10 cats, a dog and until the beginning of the year two rats who sadly passed away due to cancer and a guinea pig who I had for 10 years that passed due to cancer.

Do not let other people affect what makes you happy. I certainly do not all my animals get a lot of attention, they are my babies. As long as you can afford them and take good care of them and see them as family you will be fine.

Bog standard moggie @ScreamingValenta
I've done this before. I've just never had this oanic before Blush

Obviously meant to say panic

I think 'new cat panic' is a thing! I've had it before. Do you have a picture of your new moggie?

YearOfYouRemember · 30/05/2018 19:39

I have two cats, two guinea pigs, a dog and some fish and I'd love more cats and a few chickens, a piglet and a lamb.

As long as you can genuinely care properly then another is fine.

I find a massive difference in having three rather than two to be honest, much more work for some reason, but wouldn't be without any of them

Littletreefrog · 30/05/2018 19:43

Ok Aph then you are forgiven Grin and you most definitely need to get the kitten you don't have nearly enough animals for a farm yet.

Aph413 · 30/05/2018 19:43

Just over 2 weeks old I was told. They let me have a cuddle. Mum cat was an absolute star.
Sat here with my 2 lovely calm adult cats and wondering what on earth I'm getting myself into

My cats killed my pet birds. It can happen. I wouldn't have caged birds & a cat (sorry).

ScreamingValenta · 30/05/2018 19:45

Oooh, how tiny she is! A perfect little bundle. Is her mum a fluffy cat - she looks as though she'll have fluffy fur when she's older?

boatass · 30/05/2018 19:45

2

Eatmycheese · 30/05/2018 19:47

I have three. Two sisters almost 12 and a two year old girl. They run along fine and I think for me it’s the maximum I could cope with

they are so beautiful and precious to me as much as they cost and annoy me at times I could not part with them

viccat · 30/05/2018 19:49

I think you should get 2 kittens so they can play with each other and your calm adult cats can continue doing their own thing. Wink

Aph413 · 30/05/2018 19:50

@lljkk That's the only thing that doesn't worry me too much because the birds are kept behind a locked door from the cats. I keep them in my husbands office at the moment, I don't let my cats in the vicinity for the birds safety.

5, 5 is too many. Someone should have told me this earlier. 3 is the perfect number

EllenJanethickerknickers · 30/05/2018 19:51

You can never have too many.

Littletreefrog · 30/05/2018 19:52

Aww have your adult cats ever encountered a kitten before? My adult cat had been a mum herself before we rescued her and when we got our kitten she dotes on her.

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/05/2018 19:57

I had four growing up, it didn’t seem a lot of work but they were calm Persians.

Now I have one Bengal. One Bengal is enough.

Aph413 · 30/05/2018 19:58

@littletreefrog my second cat came to me as a kitten from an accidental litter. Somebody I knew had her cat booked to be spayed but came into heat and escaped through an upstairs window so I had one of those kittens.
So my oldest cat has dealt with kittens and he did so admirably for a grumpy old stray.
This is the first time the decision has been entirely mine rather than just circumstances throwing a cat my way.
I've always had it in my head 3 was the number for me and now it's happening the panic has set in.
@viccat I think 2 kittens would cause me to have a meltdown

I think more than 3 risks tipping you into crazy cat lady territory. I have two which is nice I wouldn’t get more because I’d worry about stressing out the ones I’ve got. I think cats are best acquired together because their not pack animals like dogs and they don’t like interlopers.
