Ginger is the new black

I don't know what's going on this year. So far we've hardly had a litter come in that hasn't contained at least one ginger kitten. Lots of litters have been entirely ginger - even the girls.

And guess what? Suddenly people don't want gingers. We just offered a boy/girl pair of adorable ginger kittens who said they didn't want ginger and didn't we have any black ones! WTF. We have ginger kittens everywhere that not a soul wants. Every other year they would be the first to go and we'd just be left with hundreds of black kittens.

There's no real point to this thread. I wonder if it's being replicated across the country.

Babies not bakes!

Flaskfan · 27/05/2018 22:19

We accidentally ended up with 3 cats because no one wanted the black one, so we took him home too. I have a massive soft spot for black and white cats, but that's because my first ever cat was black and white. We're just suckers for sob stories though.

Kraggle · 27/05/2018 22:20

I’d love love love a ginger!

I have a tabby and black and white, rescues that we got as kittens. They’re 9 years old this month. We didn’t have any preference of colour when we went to get them. We chose the tabby because she was super cute and had huge blue eyes and our black and white boy chose us by clambering onto DH’s trainer and chewing his laces.

Once our two go in the future and if I can bear to get anymore, I’d love a ginger and a black and white if it was possible.

I'm in Herts and my friends desperately seeking a kitty. Ging black any colour.

Anyone know any litters needing a lovely home?

Wolfiefan · 27/05/2018 22:30

Do a search for local rescues made. People shouldn't advertise on here.

Want2beme · 27/05/2018 22:38

She is so lovely Ryan

Vinorosso74 · 27/05/2018 23:15

There's a website called Catchat which will give a list of rescues.

fenneltea · 28/05/2018 09:51

I hate this cat racism; it seems most prevalent in felines and I really don't understand why. I love all cats of any colour or type, most of my recues are black or black and white, I lost my ginger boy a couple of years ago and really miss him. Funnily enough there are two lovely ginger cats with lovely personalities in my local rescue that have been overlooked too. :

There is a saying amongst horse folk that a good horse is never a bad colour, maybe organisations like Cats Protection need to come up with a mantra about colour being unimportant?

Itsear · 28/05/2018 19:26

A friend of DSs has just had a mixed litter and his mother told me that she had been inundated with interest about the one grey/blue kitten and had had nothing about the other 3 kittens. Personally I would much rather meet and decide rather than choosing because of colour. And for the record my tortoiseshell is fiesty....compared to my other present & past cats!

cozietoesie · 28/05/2018 22:13

The Lodger is a massive ginger tom - a big softie as well (unless you're small and furry. Wink)

MrsCatE · 28/05/2018 22:50

CatN I bow to your knowledge but just think WTF? I have just come to know about anti-black cat prejudice!!!

Also, want some advice. I have encountered a very friendly stray a couple of times near my gym. I've asked around and they think cat's being fed. I have a very aggressive, male ex-feral cat at home and know I can't bring another cat into the mix but I just want to scoop up stray cat and take to vets to at least check if it has a microchip and get it checked over. It's so friendly can't imagine it's feral. I wouldn't be able to, in reality, adopt it but gutted; it's lovely. Question is, if I took it to the vets and no one claimed it and I couldn't adopt, would they euthanise Sad?

Justonedayatatime11 · 29/05/2018 07:07

Send one my way

YesItsMeIDontCare · 29/05/2018 07:21

@MrsCatE - eek! I hope that's not the gym near me! We have a lovely stray, he's only "stray" in that he refuses to move in to any of the homes he's been offered. He's not chipped but is well cared for, de-flead and de-wormed regularly, he overnights in either of two houses if he wants to and has his afternoon nap on our sofa!

If he looks like this, please don't take him away from us!

cozietoesie · 29/05/2018 08:26

The Lodger decided that we were his people and moved himself in. (After a discussion with me. Wink)

cozietoesie · 29/05/2018 08:31

Sorry. Said discussion involved Pom Pom relinquishment and obedience to house rules. He still got a pretty good deal, I reckon. Smile

MrsCatE · 29/05/2018 09:49

YesItsMe Don't worry, it's a little black cat and I think treated rather similarly to your stray!

caoraich · 29/05/2018 09:59

Aww no! Poor gingers. I mean how could I have said no to this little face!? I'd have taken her if she was purple, mind you!

I read something interesting about ginger cats too- they were apparently first bred by vikings who prized their orange colouring (ginger is recessive) and took them to the places they pillaged. So for this reason lots of places that have high proportions of ginger people (aka viking towns so North East England, Scotland, Ireland) have more ginger cats in their feral/random mog populations!

In retrospect it was an error to name our tabby Freyja and not the ginger one Grin

cozietoesie · 29/05/2018 10:33

Well you couldn't have said No. And that's that.Smile

thecatneuterer · 29/05/2018 11:51

MrsCatE - it would be a good idea to get the stray checked out by a vet - get it scanned and get it neutered if it isn't already. However you wouldn't be able to leave it at the vets, you would have to take it away again, otherwise they would have to pts, yes.

So get it seen. If it has to be neutered it will need to be kept in four around 4 days afterwards - If you have a room you can temporarily shut it in (making sure all windows remain closed) that would be the best option. Then, if you can't find any no-kill shelters willing to take it (and everywhere is full - it's kitten season - so that's unlikely) then it would be best to put it back. At least it's being fed.

You could then work on finding a space at a shelter, or a home for it, and can pick it up again if you find something.

Our XNDNs had a ginger (neutered) tom who was the soppiest cat I've ever encountered! He adored human company, was always up for a massive cuddle and was extremely friendly towards our own two cats, who were OK with him too. Here he is with his brother (or house companion, we weren't sure of their relationship).

MrsCatE whereabouts in the country are you?
Vet's don't euthanise a healthy cat in those circumstances, they will work with charities to find it a place. We regularly take in cats from vet's in those circumstances at the charity where I volunteer.

sashh · 29/05/2018 14:20

Aw I'd love a couple of ginger kittens.

I have NEVER chosen a cat, they have always chosen me so I have never had a choice of colour.
Where I am there are lots of tabbies, I have one, next door have 5 cats, four are tabby including the mother of the only non tabby.

Although recently a beautiful ginger and white cat has been visiting the grove, I have nicknamed him 'foxy' because he looks like he stole a fox's brush.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 29/05/2018 14:42

I've heard the same! I love ginger pusses, but the cat I loved last was ginger, so if I ever get one I think I'd have to choose another colour IYKWIM.

MrsCatE · 29/05/2018 23:21

Many thanks for responding CatN and vicat. I keep being reassured that the stray is being fed and has a couple of houses that 'he' (?) visits and is in good condition but I think his coat is rough and nose scuffed. I would scoop him up in an instant but for own cat's aggressive behaviour to humans let alone other cats. He is a Bastard; but he's my Bastard Wink!

cozietoesie · 30/05/2018 00:26

It sounds to me as if it's not neutered. Wink
