Blood in urine

MarthasGinYard · 25/05/2018 09:01

Our little rescue boy is around 2 and a half.

I noticed that he seems to be weeing more frequently last couple of days, and this morning I noticed blood present be it very watered downSad

Vet will see him this afternoon.

Just this week for the first time he has been going out on his own

Maybe a UTI?

MarthasGinYard · 25/05/2018 09:10

That's what I'm thinking without googling too much.

I'm guessing vet may prescribe antibiotics.

I read somewhere it can be more serious with boys.

Yes. They can get a blockage. What food is he on? Our old boy couldn't have dried food.

MarthasGinYard · 25/05/2018 09:21

I've continued what he was on at the sanctuary.

He has a pouch of Felix one or two per day, depending on his appetite that day and we leave whiskas dried food in his bowl.

New to cats though and welcome any advice

Thanks

Yes, dcat had that, vet thought it was a uti and we were given tablets to put in her food, it soon cleared up. Hope it's just that for you!

ADarkandStormyKnight · 25/05/2018 09:25

Could be crystals forming in his urine. Two of my boys have had this - sorted with a special diet.

QueenOfAccidentalDeathStares · 25/05/2018 09:26

sounds like cystitis. it will be painful/uncomfortable for him to pee, which means he won't want to drink. keep him calm, stress free. Feliway can help here.

treatment could be painkillers, cystophan (capsules you can open and mix into food/lik-y-lix) and antibiotics.

don't panic! and best wishes to your furry one. I have been through many a bout with my old grumpy-puss. Seeing the blood can be very scary for you, but the vet will have seen it many times.

MarthasGinYard · 25/05/2018 09:32

How reassuring, I'll plug in the felliway and monitor him.

I Wondered if they can pick these infections up when they first start exploring outside he seems quite a brave explorer. Out for three hours last night until 10.

Scary Grin

Thanks all

I will report back after vets this eve

Not sure if Whiskas is the best dried food for him. A higher meat content food (sadly more expensive) is in general better for cats i.e. high protein/low carb especially if they have a tendency to UTIs. Of course ideally he'd have only wet, but I know it can be a pain especially in summer when you don't want to leave food lying about for the dlies.

MarthasGinYard · 25/05/2018 10:40

Allergic

What may be a good starting point with a better dried food? When I see them all lined up it's all a little baffling.
It's all appears very scientific on the bagsGrin

We just continued with what he'd been on, although we are more than willing to change that even if it's the more expensive brands. Were told to avoid any fish based wet food as it had upset his tummy in the shelter.

It could be cystitis, an uti or possible crystals, all of which have similar symptoms. Whichever it is, he'll need vets treatment, which you've arranged. It's essential he has as much liquid in his diet as possible as urine is more diluted and less likely to cause irritation to whatever the problem is. So I'd say stop the dry altogether, give him extra Felix pouches possibly with a little water mixed in if he'll take it. Also, you could give him some cat milk (possibly mixed with a little water if it's too rich for him).

Depending on the suspect, your vet may give antibiotics or painkillers, and may possibly take a urine sample. You may be able to get something like Cystaid/Cystease from the vet or you can certainly buy it online, I don't think it has any side effects but lines the bladder again reducing irritation. It won't solve a uti or crystals but will help keep him more comfortable, it will help greatly with cystitis longterm.

He's a beautiful boy. Has he enjoyed going out or been a bit nervous?

Let us know how the appointment goes.

MarthasGinYard · 25/05/2018 12:14

Thank you Starfish that's all really good to know. I hadn't tried the cat milk either only water.

He was very slightly nervous for the first couple of days but is getting rather too brave now, which worries me slightly.

He's just sleeping now. All his weeing seemed to just be the last two Mornings and when he's been fed.

Wil update later

Huge thanks all

See what the vet recommends, there's plenty of foods out there but I gather Nature's Menu is very popular with other Litter Tray users?

MarthasGinYard · 25/05/2018 19:46

They suspect an infection as you have all thought.

He's had an injection of AB

Metacam In food

Cystophan capsules

All in all a little Molotov cocktail for the wee boy.

He's all snuggly and fussy

Thanks so much all

That's good news, should be cleared up in no time. He's a beautiful cat!

starfish4 · 26/05/2018 11:06

It'll probably be a few days before you see any improvement, but hope he's better soon.

MarthasGinYard · 27/05/2018 09:13

Been checking his tray seems to be getting better

Thanks all

glad he seems on the mend

QueenOfAccidentalDeathStares · 01/06/2018 16:04

@MarthasGinYard

How is your little furry one?

MarthasGinYard · 04/06/2018 22:34

Ah thanks for asking and He was better until today

Finished his meds yesterday and starting passing blood again

Phoned vets and attempted a urine sample. Couldn't get enough so took him down to me checked over.

They gave him another injection and months worth of meds, want to know what's causing this though....we have to get sample by Wednesday or take him in for them to do it.

In himself he's absolutely fine, playful as ever eating, purring etc. Eating lots of grass and doing the retching thing, but I think I read that's normal?

So worried about him. Nurse at vets said they can get seriously poorly very quickly with these kind of symptoms. I guess we will know more when proper sample etc.

starfish4 · 05/06/2018 11:16

So sorry to hear about your boy. Urine problems can take a while to clear up sometimes. Obviously follow any advice/treatment/tests your vet suggests, but it might be worth buying some Cystophan/Cystease/Cystaid online and keeping him on them for a while after all other meds have left his system. This lines the bladder and will help irritation.

MarthasGinYard · 05/06/2018 16:16

Thanks star

I'll have a look at those

Will know more tmrw when take his sample in
