Why doesn't anyone want my cat?

Hello,

I have to, reluctantly, give up my 2-year-old pedigree green-eyed, silver/brown tabby Maine Coon. For personal reasons I can no longer provide him a suitable home.

I've put up an advert on Pets4Homes, and NO-ONE is interested. He's a friendly energetic boy, GCCF registered, neutered, up to date with all of his jags, cuddly if you catch him in the right mood, and completely gorgeous.

Do people just want kittens?

Could be that people only want super cheap/free, or think (If it is cheap) that it's a scam.

It would be better for the cat to go through a reputable charity though, there are plenty around who will ensure he gets a good home.

HardAsSnails · 24/05/2018 15:39

You will have a much better chance of finding a good home through a rescue who can do proper checks etc.

Shinesweetfreedom · 24/05/2018 15:40

Please please don't let him fall into the wrong hands.
Please get in touch with Cats Protection.

viccat · 24/05/2018 15:44

Please don't rehome him directly, you don't have the experience to properly vet the people and make sure they understand the commitment. Especially so for a 'pretty' cat people will want for the wrong reasons.

Contact several local cat charities and add him to their waiting lists, ideally as soon as possible because we are all inundated this time of year and have waiting lists...

fourfuckssake4 · 24/05/2018 15:46

Can you pm me. Have lost one of my precious cats recently

PetulantPolecat · 24/05/2018 15:55

Didnt you sign a contract with a breeder that stipulates you will return the kitten you purchased if at any point of its life you can no longer keep it?

Most breeders make you sign this.

I tried looking for your advert, and found nothing in 14 pages. Did you specify he’s neutered and registered? I’m guessing you’re asking same amount as a registered kitten, if you’re not getting offers.

Please go through a reputable breeder - lots of them have Facebook groups and it’s a small community- they will help you find a proper home as often, they get enquiries for their retiring studs/queens too.

thecatneuterer · 24/05/2018 15:55

People don't want cats because there in a huge over supply of them. There are kittens everywhere at the moment. All rescues are full and, to make matters worse, things adoption wise are always bad at the start of the Summer as people usually want to wait until after their Summer holidays before adopting.

Good advice above.

Can you really not keep him? Surely any home with you is better than no home?

Vinorosso74 · 24/05/2018 16:24

Rehoming centres/shelters will likely have waiting lists but contact them and they can add you to their lists. Try breed specific rescues along with the usual Cats Protection, Blue Cross etc

Wolfiefan · 24/05/2018 16:28

I understand you feel you have to give up your cat but pets4homes is NOT the way. Contact a rescue. Isn't there a breed specific rescue?

MarthaArthur · 24/05/2018 16:32

Oh he sounds devine. Im so sorry i cant take him as i live with someone with allergies but breeder is a good call. Or rescues i wouldnt advise giving him away for free when you dont know the people. Ask around on cat charities too as even if they cant take him they may have advise.

Cailleach1 · 24/05/2018 16:43

Gosh, that website is a bit sad. A poor girl cat for sale for £25. I hope she doesn't end up in the hands of just anyone.

The animal charities are probably the way to go if you want to ensure that her new home is a vetted as possible.

Vinorosso74 · 24/05/2018 16:53

It is. I saw a beautiful black cat for free Sad.
The centre I'm at had spaces after Christmas with no cats coming in from other branches or charities so the staff acquired some of the free cats online bit sadly that didn't last long and unfortunately there or no capacity for them all. Wonder how many of this year's online kittens will end up in rescues next year?

dangermouseisace · 24/05/2018 16:57

I wouldn’t trust a private rehiring ad on pets4homes. We got our bunnies through a rescue, as there is less chance of unexpected surprises. Contact a rescue and see if they can help.

LanguidLobster · 24/05/2018 16:59

I'm really sorry but I got mine off gumtree 10 years ago Blush. We didn't know any better, I just wanted a little cat no-one else wanted.

I'm not the best catmum in the world although she's lived to tell the tale ('heeeellllp! Get me outta here!!') but I did mean for life when we took her. Husband didn't last.

dangermouseisace · 24/05/2018 17:00

rehoming

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 24/05/2018 17:00

Seriously please don't put cats on those websites - people will take them for all sorts of awful reasons including to use as bait for dog fighting.

Take it to a rescue centre - a Maine Coon will be adopted in no time.

TiredAndIrrational · 24/05/2018 17:11

OP contact the Maine Coon Cat Club (either google them or search on Facebook) - they'll help you rehome your coonie to someone who knows and understands the breed.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/05/2018 17:22

St Francis Persian rescue may be able to take him. They often rehome other breeds. They are in Yorkshire but transport can sometimes e arranged.

ocelot41 · 29/05/2018 17:32

I second St Francis - got my beautiful MC girl from there
