Cat won't clean himself

Lately my cat will not clean himself after using the litter tray, twice this week already I have found poop stains where he has been sat and have had to try and clean his bottom for him. Just for context I have two babies under 2 and have enough bums to wipe already but I don't want him on my furniture or carpet when he is dirty.

Any suggestions why he may not be cleaning himself and what I can do?

Is he really furry on his bum? Could he just be missing some because of that
Is he old and maybe getting to stiff to curve round to wash?

Hmm he's not old old, I think 7 or 8, he is quite fat though, do you think he just can't reach?

He would have to be pretty fat to not reach! It is possible though.
Does he have an upset tummy?

ImAGoofyGoober · 19/05/2018 17:53

How loose are his stools? He might not want to lick it if there is a lot there.
Have you thought about changing his diet? Going raw gives a firmer poo

Is he very fluffy?

Maybe you could trim the fur around his bum?

Is he getting disturbed when he’s in the litter tray. Sometimes they jump out before they’re finished and they can lead to not cleaning up properly.

Also think he might benefit from a change of diet to raw. Make sure to include organ meat.

He has been on dry food only, Royal canin high dilution after he had a bad UTI, bet said not to give wet food anymore. I will speak to the vet and ask if he thinks he can have something else as its been over a year now.

It's usually quite firm ish poo but it was quite soft today, caught in his fur and maybe he gets disturbed sometimes too. He still jumps a little when the toddler screams or baby cries.

I have no idea how I would go about trimming his fur round there, he's not the most accommodating cat 😬🤔

Hmmm. Vets aren't always the best to advise on nutrition. We were always told dry food was the worst for UTI suffering cats. Bet the vet sells Royal Canin yes? Hmm

Just wipe his bum with a tissue,I've had to do this with one of my cats.

Had the same again today I wonder what's going on. He seems fine, his usual self. I think he's maybe been getting over fed though lately as my DH has started working a lot more and coming in late when I'm in bed and the cat usually manages to get something out of him.
Sometimes crossed wires in the mornings too, he meows at us both separately and gets breakfast off us both without realising he's already had it. Must keep a diary.
