Peeing outside the box

We rescued her very over a year and it took a long time for her to trust us now she's a perfect member of our family. She follows me around the house, likes to play, reminds us when it's time she her treats.
The litter tray has never been problem since day one. However over the last week or so I've noticed that she is peeing beside the box (never poops only pees)
I'm wondering if she's trying trying to tell us that something is wrong or maybe she just wants me to change the litter. And advice gratefully received!

I'd guess that she's not happy about something. Have you changed your routine at all?

viccat · 16/05/2018 15:58

Is she peeing more often or straining? Could be a UTI in that case.

Have you changed the type of litter, or the cleaning products you use for the box or around the box at all?

She probably needs two litter trays, one for each

I'd keep the litter tray scrupulously clean and also, try an air deodoriser. Puppy pads are a good idea - although I've gone now for putting the whole tray on a 'bed pad' which is larger and therefore easier to change.

Thank you all for the replies. I'm not worried about the floor (it's tiled, so easy enough to clean up)
I can't think of anything that could be upsetting her and I don't think she peeing more than usual.
I think the best course of action for the moment is to clean out the tray more often.
I've made an appointment with the vet so hopefully it's nothing too serious.

Let us know how she gets on? Smile

I will, thank you @cozietoesie

The vet took a urine sample and it looks like she has an inflammation in her kidneys. We're changing her food immediately and taking some blood tests. Hopefully the change of food will be enough to get her back to normal

Fingers crossed that she's OK.

Has the vet prescribed any meds for her?

IamSerena · 01/06/2018 06:08

The blood tests indicate no issues to her kidneys but there are crystals in her urine. The problem apparently isn't very bad at the moment
We are changing her food to a specific vet supplied food. And we will retest after she's finished the food to see if things are better. If not we will need an ultrasound or an xray
