Smelly green pus

Evening all,
Cat has a small hole in its head full of a hard white substance that is oozing green pus that stinks 😷. He's going to the vets tomorrow. Anyone else ever had this happen to their cat? It's very strange and came out of nowhere.

Probably a puncture from a cats tooth.
If you cat is happy to let you you can clean it with salt water. Try to get as much pus out as possible.

Lonecatwithkitten · 15/05/2018 21:58

Abscess from cat bite or scratch, really very, very common. Clean up squeeze out as much pus as possible.

Archfarchnad · 15/05/2018 23:37

Yup, Archcat got an abscess like this after one of his many fights last summer. Luckily we got him to the vet very quickly after it burst, and was thoroughly washed out. I think he got antibiotics too. We had to go four times in total over a week for the wound to be washed out. It was horrible when the vet had thesaline injection thing right under the skin of his skull, but my brave hero wasn't fussed in the slightest so it presumably didn't hurt. Serves the silly git right for scrapping!

Morning, been cleaning it by dabbing it with warm water and rubbing on germolene. Already looks much better from doing this a few times but he's still off to the vet today.

No - don't put on germolene! It's dangerous for cats. Get it off now! Don't use any human disinfectants on cats.

Bel04 · 16/05/2018 09:51

@thecatneuterer why is it dangerous? It's just got antiseptic in it?

I've just had a google and a lot of places are saying it is completely fine just as long as they can't kick it but this is in his forehead so can't be reached.

Well I wouldn't risk it. And I don't understand the chemistry/biology of it, but lots of things are dangerous to cats that aren't to humans - TCP, dettol, bleach and lily pollen for example. Never put anything on your cat that's meant for humans without checking with a vet (or at least Google) first.

vampirethriller · 16/05/2018 10:01

My cat had the same, antibiotics and it was fine. Made him miserable for a bit but didn't stop him fighting!

BalloonFlowers · 16/05/2018 10:02

Saline or iodine are much better for pet wounds than creams and lotions designed for humans.

@thecatneuterer sorry, can I hijack? How old do you reckon a feral kitten needs to be before it can survive without mummy? A kitten I reckon to be about 10 weeks old has rocked up under our A.C. unit. We really can't take it in, but we have put a tray to collect the water dripping, and are putting down a small handful of cat biscuits each day. There are no rescue organisations out here, it's roasting hot, and the ladies that try to rehome pet cats are swamped without feral being thrown at them. How much do I need to prepare the kids about survival rates?

thecatneuterer · 16/05/2018 10:05

Balloonflowers - pm'ing you

Our cats head swelled to a large size at the weekend and we took him to the vets, she shaved his head and popped the abscess that was hiding there. He had an antibiotic injection. The wound stinks and clear fluid is oozing from it and it looks sloughy. I'm just cleaning it with salty water 4 times a day, why oh why do they fight over a small patch of grass Confused

Lonecatwithkitten · 16/05/2018 16:00

Can I echo what TCN said a lot of human antiseptics are irritant to cats and dogs. Hibiscrub and iodine are okay. TCP is the worst.

MikeUniformMike · 16/05/2018 16:05

Another vote for no disinfectants or antiseptics. Cats clean themselves thoroughly and will ingest things you put on them. often with fatal consequences.
Wounds like you described are common and probably from fighting. Clean with tepid water on a cotton wool pad.
