Window netting for cats

Hello
Can I pick the brains of those who have netting on their windows, my Maine coon kitten jumped from the first floor window yesterday, we were very careful to keep windows closed but my DS 8 forgot he was devestated.

Luckily the kitten is fine, but, what with the hot weather I thought I ought to look into making the Windows safe so we can open them.

I have looked at flatcat but am a bit overwhelmed with all the products available so wondered if anyone had first hand experience and could give me some advice. Thanks in advance.

In my spare (cat) room I have netting at the window. But it's just cheap green stuff, with cup hooks to keep it in place and a cord to keep it tight to the window. The trick is to make sure you leave the net itself baggy so they can't climb up it.

It's cheap, it works, but it looks like shit. That's the sum total of my knowledge on the subject.

I'm sure Flatcat stuff looks much better, but will of course cost much more.

We have a flat cat! Chap was really nice and helpful answering questions I had (as I know you need to do a lot of measurements) and 2 years after purchasing it, it's still going strong. I was initially a bit confused as to how it would fit, but it actually fits perfectly.

I was really worried about our cat escaping, and flat cats are really robust - we still really have to put some effort into taking it down. To be honest... we're lazy, so we typically leave it up all year round!

Fluffy, do your Persians actually climb onto windowsills? mine don't!

Another vote here for Flatcats. I've had it coming up for 2 years now and find it perfect. Fits very strongly, mesh is just big enough to let the breeze through but vastly cuts down the insects that can get in as a bonus. You can see through it pretty well and it doesn't look too bad from outside - I was talking to my neighbour opposite last year & she didn't realise I had them up, just thought I'd left the window open.

I can't afford to have one made for my patio doors unfortunately so I have cat proof netting stretched across on telescopic uprights. It's a bit of a pain - you either have to fix it firmly to the walls each side & not be able really to use the doors, or do as I do and risk a determined cat take it down (as local evil tom did last year from outside). Boycat is big and heavy and stupid, so he tried to push his way through this year and has actually stretched the netting in a couple of places so the 1 inch square holes are nearer 2 inches where he pushed his weight against it. If I could afford it, I'd replace with a tailor made Flatcat to fit the slightly unusual size of the door.

Toddlerteaplease He does indeed! (Only got the one.... at the moment!)

We only have a flat cat in our living room window, however Little P jumps up on all window sills.... the ones in the lounge, in my bedroom and in my partners bedroom - in fact, that's typically where he spends the night - sleeping on the windowsill in my partners room, so he can see out the window, and also see my partner (as he likes to be near one or both of us Hmm)

Are yours quite chilled out? Ours is pretty chilled in general, but since having his 'nose job' a few weeks ago, he's a LOT more active and runs around the house and jumps on things a lot more..... and it's just lovely to not hear him snort or pant Smile

Toddlerteaplease · 08/05/2018 18:16

Yes. Mine are very chilled. But neither can jump. So the only windowsill they can get on is the one in the lounge. As they climb on the sofa.
Snorg still snores and struggles but I do think her nose surgery helped her a little bit. My colleges still think it was done for cosmetic purposes though! HmmConfused

We have Maine coons and flat cats. They’ve always been great. I suspect if they really wanted to they could ram their way through it, but they don’t bother.

"My colleges still think it was done for cosmetic purposes though! "

.... No normal person would think that as everyone would KNOW that Persians have a face that is already carved by angels Grin

(admittedly my sister suggests they might be drunken angels with spades... but hey ho! )

My two are the most beautiful Persians in the world. Unfortunately apart from a couple of friends, and the litter tray, No one agrees with me! Apparently they are 'fugly'
