Cat has really bad kidney infection

Diagnosed on Monday but told to stop the dried food and just give wet.
My problem is my cat is a nightmare and doesn’t cope with change very well. Before this he didn’t have a lot of dried food but it was there if he wanted it and had 3/4 purina tin of wet food at teatime.
I’m hoping that I don’t have to feed him twice a day to make up for the not having dried as I’m sometimes in hospital and can only get someone to come and feed him once a day, but I’m worried he’ll go hungry.
Thanks

Cats, unlike dogs, need to be fed little and often. You can get automatic feeder on timer. Plenty of fresh water too. Is it infection or kidney failure?

abbsisspartacus · 02/05/2018 21:34

My cats used to have three meals a day when they were ill it went to five smaller meals a day

CrazyCatMum · 02/05/2018 21:47

It’s a kidney infection he has.
He hasn’t really been eating much the past couple of days which I can understand having had kidney infections before.
I just don’t know how to stop the dried food and work out the wet food amount and if it’s possible to feed him once a day.

I thought the automatic feeders only worked for dried food?

I don't think those timed feeders are any good for wet food, although I could well be mistaken. I suppose you'll have to arrange cattery holidays if you're not going to be able to be there for a couple or more days.

I wouldn't worry about the future requirements just now but focus on getting him well. Is he on antibiotics now?

CrazyCatMum · 02/05/2018 22:56

The vet gave him a 14 day extended antibiotic injection and I have pain meds for the next week for him. I’ve to get another urine sample next week to see if he still has blood in his urine.
I feel so sorry for the wee soul, he just looks miserable.

There are timed feeders that have freezer blocks to go in them to make them okay for wet food. I got mine from amazon.

I'd say there are a few options,

Try a food timer

While he's getting over it at least, could someone pop in to give him extras meals a neighbour, friend, local teenager in street who you could pay a little do it.

You probably have a local pet sitting organisation you could pay to feed him for a short while

On top of this, how long are you with him? You could also feed him as soon as you see him and then put some fresh out before you leave, even if it's a short while afterwards, that way with one of the above he's getting regular meals.

My cat used to always get kidney infections. I got him the cystaid capsules to sprinkle on his food which are for cats who get bad cystitis regularly. It seemed to really help him. I also got a syringe thing and would scoosh water down his throat a few times a day as he was terrible for hardly ever touching his water bowl.

OP it might be good to do some research to see which dry food would be best for cats with urinary problems. I currently have mine on horizon which is a very good quality kibble. I buy it from Zoopla.co.uk they are a fraction to what you would pay for pet store foods.

Also since I changed my cats from sachets to a raw diet you can buy he nature's menu packs in pets at homes freezer section. I use the small cubed blocks they are about 99p and will last 1 cat 2 days. Just feed it to him raw, my cats love the chicken one.

Sparkle used to constantly get uti's and I fed my cats hills and royal canine. Changed to raw and his condition is brilliant and no more uti's.

Good luck xx

Second the automatic feeders. Freeze block in, and then the food. When the timer goes off, the lid opens and the food inside becomes available. Would be great in your situation as your cat sitter would only have to come once to fill the dispensers.

CrazyCatMum · 16/05/2018 20:21

Can I ask some more advice please?
Cat is no better so vet took him off his wet food and put him on a special dried food.
He’s concerned about his water intake now he’s off wet food.
He has a bowl of water that he never really shows much interest in so I wondered if the water fountains might be a good idea for him, maybe the flower one.
I don’t wanna get one if they are useless but am trying to make it more interesting for him.

Thanks

Try a human cup or glass. Most cats live drinking out of cups. Mine certainly do!
