Long haired cat doesn’t like being brushed!

I have a kitten who will be a long haired cat as he grows up, I’ve started trying to give him a little brush but he hates it!
Any tips on getting him used to it or what sort of brush I should be using? This is my first experience with a longer haired cat so any tips are well received

Try a kids tangle teaser. My Persians love it. Or try a zoom groom. But don't overuse it as it makes the coat look awful.

Persist!
(If you check out any posts about my Obie you will see why Grin)
Mine hated the furminator, but Ophie tolerates a comb with swivelling teeth so it doesn't tug. Plus a matt splitter and a pair of hair dressing scissors for knots!

Obie, from tiny, has refused point blank and as a result I currently have a 25 pound bald Maine Coon snoring on the sofa...costs me £160 a time to have him shaved under sedation twice a year!!!!!

He does not look attractive at the moment....!

Have you tried a wide tooth comb? Scritch him between ears and around head /scent glands to start.

I use a comb and always start gently at the head. I then take my chances working my way down her body, hoping that I won't be slapped too often. It's the bloomers poo trews and belly you have to be quick about. Just do small bits at a time, so that she can get used to it.

I have had a similar experience to StillMedusa - one will tolerate 5 mins with the Furminator, but then he is generally more laid back in personality and not at all aggressive, whereas his brother hisses at the sight of a brush so has to have a shave twice a year to sort out the matts. I felt like a terrible cat owner letting him get like that, but they are just different personalities and some long hair cats just need professional help!

I have a double-sided-brush-thingy for Leroy. One side is brush, one side is more like a comb so I can do lovely long brushes with the brush side, then flip it over and attack the knots with the comb, then back to the brush feigning innocence when he starts swishing his tail.

I wear padding, just to be on the safe side!!!

I have a raggoll who doesn't like getting brushed. She will tolerate about 2 mins before she starts to kick. We bribe her with treats. She loves the thrive freeze dried chicken pieces so I keep the box of those next to her when she is getting brushed and give her one every few mins. Definitely helps!

We had similar with a semi long haired cat.
Catnip chilled her out.
Find the right comb or brush so it doesn't hurt.
Short but frequent sessions.
Treats.
Stroke cat, comb and stroke again. If cat likes being stroked it then associates comb with affection.

Thanks for all the advice! I’ve bought a tangle teezer and he seems a bit better with that.

Good luck. Little and often.

Wolfiefan · 04/05/2018 19:03

Posted too soon. Watch out if it doesn't reach through to the undercoat or you could end up with a shaved cat!

IHaveBrilloHair · 04/05/2018 19:06

Ha, I have the opposite problem, my long haired demands all the brushy time for himself and doesn't like it when the others are getting brushed.
