Pet insurance

I guess I've always been fortunate that none of my furries have ever needed any type of treatment at the vets. (Touch wood!)

We are moving (hopefully) to a new house, where there is a busier road than what we have near us at the moment.

I've never had pet insurance so not really sure what type of cover would be best? And if any company's are worth going to or avoiding?

Tesco's have been brilliant with my multiple claims

I’ve just claimed through Animal Friends and they’ve been great.
If you’re near a busy road can you cat proof the garden maybe?

I'm with Petplan and they are brilliant.

Whoever you go with, make sure you choose lifetime cover so any illnesses are covered for the life of your cat. Also make sure you choose a decent level of cover as bills can soon mount up.

Animal Friends is one I would avoid they have all kinds of restrictions and with E&L are high up on the list to not pay out.
Make sure you go for a lifetime policy and single condition cover at least £7K.

We are with PetPlan for our cat and our two dogs. In the past, we had it for our other three cats too.

Five out of the six policies have probably not paid out an amount equal to or higher than the total premiums paid in - but the sixth has made up for that, and then some!

We have two dogs, and one is a rescue cross breed (Labrador pointer, we think) - and because we don't know that much about her history, we decided to take out PetPlan's highest cover level for her - and ohhh boy are we glad we did.

A couple of years back, she ruptured the cruciate ligaments in both knees, and needed surgery on them. After the second knee was done, and she was getting back to normal, she dislocated her kneecap (a rare, but known problem after the surgery she'd had), and needed a third, urgent orthopaedic operation. Also, as a result of the painkillers she was given for the dislocation, she developed a gastric ulcer that bled, and she needed another emergency admission to the vet hospital.

The bill for everything, including all the appointments she needed, and the admissions for the surgeries, and for all the x-rays she needed (pre-op, and then to check progress at each post-op consultation) and for the ulcer, and for all the medication she needed, came to over £10,000 - and PetPlan paid up without a single quibble. The only thing they didn't pay for was the special food she needed when she got the ulcer, and frankly, as they had been so wonderful about everything else, we thought this was entirely fair.

One thing that made a BIG difference for us was that the vet hospital, where the dog had all her care for the knees etc, were happy to bill PetPlan directly - we just had to pay the excess, and cover the one thing they didn't pay for - so we didn't have to find, and then claim back, huge sums of money. It meant we could get our dog the care she needed, without having to worry about the cost.

As a result, I cannot recommend PetPlan highly enough - I think they are simply the best.
