I got a kitten in November last year and was told it was a girl by the lady she came from, and the vet didn't say anything at the 9 week kitten check up ( I got her at 8 weeks because mum was trying to hurt her) so i assumed that she was a girl and called her Luna. Roll on yesterday evening and she was cleaning her bits and I saw a little pink bit poking out!!! I've tried looking for any tom cat bits because id have thought if she was a tom then her/his balls would habe come out by now, but 1. she won't let me look properly, and 2. Shes so fluffy i cant see a thing anyway!! My question Is, if it turns out that she is a boy would I be unreasonable to change her/his name to lunar (all grey and white markings, hopefully the pic will have attached) do you think im over reacting because ive never had a girl cat before or do you think i should be going to the vets with her to check? 😬😬 both my cats are indoor cats by the way that's why I haven't been to spay her yet, I've been waiting for the warmer weather to come as I use public transport 😬 pics are from the day we got her and about a month afterwards 💖

How about Lunatic??

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 10/04/2018 14:53

Perhaps s/he's gender fluid?

Popadoodledoo · 10/04/2018 14:53

Lol, other end! Grin

My boss has a female cat called Gary. Was named before they found out it had been sexed wrong.

Keep the name as whatever you would like.

BurningGubbins · 10/04/2018 14:59

Same happened to us with my childhood cat, although we didn’t find out for years (he was run over, the vet said something about HIM being tough and we looked like absolute fools). We kept the female name and he lived happily for lots more years (neutered).

Want2beme · 10/04/2018 15:09

Luna is gorgeous. Take her to the vet to be neutered and you'll find out what her sex is.

Wolfiefan · 10/04/2018 15:12

Hasn't this cat seen a vet at all? What about flea and worm treatment and health check?

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/04/2018 15:53

Surely it’s more important to spay females so they don’t get pyometra?.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/04/2018 20:24

OP said the kitten had seen a vet at a 9 week check and she is going to have her spayed once the weather is better as she uses public transport.

What a gorgeous kitten OP!

Thanks for the replies, and thanks for the compliments she really is a beauty 😁 she's seen a vet 3 times Wolfie, for what it's worth that was when she had both jabs and a chip. I order flea and worm stuff off the internet because it's cheaper than the vets, plus they only get done once every 4/5 months anyway with them being indoor cats (my vet said it was fine to do this btw I asked her) and fluffy shes only just turned 7 months old and with her weight and size my vet said I should wait until about 8/9 months to have her done so she'll be a bit bigger and have a bit more weight on her (shes the same size and weight as my boy cat was at 5 months old) 😬 and my boy cat is neutered so because she doesn't go outside and therell be no accidents at home I can afford to wait until she's about a year old. And either way it's been that cold recently she'd freeze if i took her in a crate (it's 10 minutes to the bus interchange, then were sat on a drafty bus for 25 minutes and then another 10 minutes from the bus stop to the vets) and I can't afford a 20-25 pound taxi run on top of neutering Sad so since she doesn't go outside I'm leaving it until june/July when it's toasty warm. Either way she's booked in on Sunday because I can get a lift there and back 😊 so I'll soon know 😅 I'm glad I'm not the only person this has possibly happened to though, and if she does turn out a boy it would explain why her wee smells so badly 😷

I doubt she would freeze.
7 months old isn't young for neutering.
Buying flea stuff online? Unless it's with a prescription it could be dangerous and likely won't work.

SleepFreeZone · 10/04/2018 22:35

All I will say is that if you have a Tomcat then he will start spraying so you want to get him neutered as soon as you can. Number one the smell is absolutely vile and a nightmare to deal with and number two when they start to spray they will often carry on even without their balls.

Longdistance · 10/04/2018 22:36

When I got my Bobby, I was told he was girl cat, so he was named Rosie to begin with. We didn’t know until I took her (him) to the vets at 3mo. He did rather enjoy having the thermometer shoved up his bottom, he purred away Blush

There are many good reasons for neutering before first season - for girls mainly health benefits as well as preventing the frustration of being in season, and for boys as has been said, neutering before sexual maturity almost entirely removes the risk of them spraying later on. A young cat in its first season is also at a great risk of escape - even from an indoor home, they are so determined they'll try to get out of the smallest gap of an open window etc.

Four months is the usual age although it can be done earlier, and most vet's should do from 1kg of weight.

As for freezing, it's currently about 15 degrees C outside if you are in the UK and cats go out all year round...
