New boy cried all night

We brought our gorgeous boy home from the rescue centre yesterday. He is adorable - once he got over his nerves he came out and gave lovely cuddles and purrs Smile
We had a lovely evening with him. Only problem was when it came to bedtime he didn’t want to be left alone. We followed the advice we were given to leave him in a room with everything he needs. Cried for hours. At one point he got out and came up to our bed but just purred like mad, jumped all over us and wouldn't settle (DH then admitted he'd left the door slightly ajar in case he needed air or was frightened). So I took him down and shut him in properly. Poor chap carried on crying for hours. Feels so cruel. Wondered if anyone has any advice please?

He is absolutely adorable. He's so like my old kitty when he was a kitten. A lovely fluffy tuxedo. I miss my kitty so much. I remember his first night, he kept me awake with purrs, constant padding and meows, he was so happy to be rescued. He did settle down after a while, but he was always a fidget pantsGrin

Here he was as a very old man. He was 20 when he was PTS last year. Hope you have many happy cat years togetherSmile

Want2beme - what a gorgeous boy, bless his heart, very similar to our guy! Wow 20 - he did well ☺️
I have a feeling we have a fidget pants on our hands too. Hopefully he’ll settle down a bit soon though!

It's all new to him, he just needs to settle in Smile

I'd keep him in for a couple of weeks (tough work) but he needs to know your his new family

Also play with him, it will help keep him calmer whilst he's housebound. Ours love a toy on a stick and string.

Also feliway is good for helping them to settle Smile

He's a handsome chap though Smile Enjoy him Smile

He’s gorgeous. Ours sleeps in the utility overnight. He’s 9 and still thinks 4:30am is get up time.

I’d keep him in at night, it’s a terrible time for cats to get run over & there’s a uk cat killer on the loose.

Cats aren't really nocturnal, they are crepuscular (lovely word!) which means most active at dawn and dusk naturally.

He may well be a bit more active at night while he's settling in, as he feels safer in the dark. Mine are most active just after their breakfast and just after I've gone to bed - they usually give me a few minutes to drift off THEN start charging around the house like a pair of baby hippos Grin.

OP I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but our rescue cat still cries at night - 2 years in. I would love her to sleep with his, however when we have tried she was VERY naughty. WE tried it again about 9 months later and she had calmed down but she will only sleep with her head on our pillow and right on my face. I'm pregnant and she can't sleep with us when we have a newborn - I don't want her to bale the baby so she is now back in the kitchen/dining room. She has everything she needs - apart from the pillow...

Ooh that’s a word I’ve never come across Allergic, I like!
If we had a bigger place i would have loved to re-home a little play mate for him...

I am going to break with the crowd here and say, if you don't want him in your room and think you will sleep badly, just put a radio on low where he is and a warm place to sleep. My Dcat is a. Very big and takes over the bed and b. Very insistent that morning starts play at 4am.

After two months of trying the 'I am lying dead still and NOT moving' game we conceded that it wasn't going to work. She has slept in the kitchen diner ever since 11-6 and is totally fine. She gets a treat every night when she is 'tucked up' and seems to think that's all alright then.
