Adopting a cat

Hi, we have decided to adopt a 1 year old male cat - we pick him up on Friday. Grin

We are first time cat owners and the adoption centre mentioned he has wet food in the morning/evening and dry food throughout the day.

How much wet food should he be having, is 1/2 a pouch in morning and night too little?

We just want to make sure we buy enough of everything

Imo you need to get him a friend. ...

Emma198 · 01/04/2018 17:43

Ours have 1 sachet each in the morning, one to share in the afternoon and one each in evening with dry food out all day. I'm sure the box says 2-3 a day for a fully grown cat.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 01/04/2018 17:45

How big is he?

My chap weighs in at about 6kg and has 2 pouches plus biscuits per day. He has his pouches in four small meals and a small handful of bix.

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/04/2018 17:47

It goes by weight, if you weigh him you’ll know how much to feed.

So if it says 3 pouches knock it down to 2 then put a bowl of biscuits down but if he seems genuinely hungry I feed mine.

It depends on the food and his weight so you'll need to go by the packet. Weigh out dry food so you don't overfeed.
Oh and photos of cat Grin

The amount to feed him will depend on size.

We adopted a 1y old cat three months ago. She is about 3kg and her daily food intake totals 30g dry food and 1 sachet of wet food.

TheSecondOfHerName · 01/04/2018 21:45

He's very handsome; amazing eyes.

Vinorosso74 · 01/04/2018 21:48

He's gorgeous!

SolemnlySwear2010 · 01/04/2018 22:03

He is the most docile thing ever - so friendly even though he had never met is before.

Cannot wait for Friday Smile

What a handsome boy. He looks quite a big cat.

SolemnlySwear2010 · 01/04/2018 23:03

My friend says he looks like a Maine Coon? I have no idea what that is but she was impressed/surprised that he was in an adoption centre as apparently they are quite an expensive breed.

He looks a bit like my MC boy, but mine has tufts ears and more of a ruff. He’s also fluffier. He looks gorgeous- I love a nice tabby.

MrsSchadenfreude · 01/04/2018 23:07

Mine was also a rescue. He is large and lovely, but dim.

RamblinRosie · 01/04/2018 23:13

Oh, handsome boy!!!

From his size, I'd start with one pouch am and one pm, with hard stuff in between, then see how it works out. If he scoffs everything, then look at limiting what he's offered.

Some cats are self limiting in terms of what they eat, others are not! I've got two slim grazers and one porky snarfer....

37KAT · 01/04/2018 23:25

Well done for getting an older cat from a rescue centre. One of the benefits of getting a cat opposed to a kitten is that you can already see his personality.
He is gorgeous- enjoy!

SolemnlySwear2010 · 02/04/2018 00:35

MrsSchadenfreude - he has white tufts coming out of his ears, is that what you mean?

Sorry the photo isnt very clear Blush

37KAT - thanks, we did briefly think about getting a kitten but decided an older cat was more for us Grin

Solemnly - mine has little tufts on top of his ears too!
