Rescue cat is home!!!!

Have had two threads in the last fortnight, first to talk about the loss of our cat who was run over and to ask advice about whether to get another cat. Lots of wonderful advice. The second was yesterday to talk about a potential rescue boy with a flea allergy. He is missing a lot of fur.
Well......rescue boy arrived here this morning and is currently asleep on top of my high kitchen cupboards after exhausting himself exploring our house and head butting us all enthusiastically in his desperate attempt to get some fuss and attention. He is glorious. His fur is looking so much better than when I saw his photos on the website. I’ve now got some salmon oil to add to his food to help condition his skin and coat. Hopefully that will help the itch as it must be uncomfortable. He frantically threw a bowl of biscuits down his neck within an hour of arriving and has had a nibble at a bowl of wet food. He is not in any way underweight and has obviously had plenty of food at the rescue. He was a stray apparently. His vet report states he didn’t have fleas on arrival so he must have been treated a wee while ago. He’s so friendly that I doubt he’s been mistreated but all the same, no body has come to claim him in the few weeks he was there. He was already neutered before he arrived but wasn’t chipped. I wonder why that was. He’s only estimated to be between 3 and 5 so I found it odd that someone has gone to the bother of having him neutered but not microchipped. He was microchipped this morning and is now registered to us. We are so very happy to have a cat in our house agin, the void our last one has left is enormous. I hope so much that everything works out with this big guy and that he likes living here. I’ll keep him inside as long as I can so he thinks of this as his house. Fingers crossed.
What wonderful work they do at our local rescue. Absolute stars.

That's great. He's gorgeous and very comfortable looking.

tearsofrobertsmith · 29/03/2018 17:49

Thank you all, he’s lovely isn’t he? His name is now Edward. Ollivander, I could cry looking at your photos, thank you so so much! Yours is gorgeous! What a difference. Did you do anything special? I have been told to keep up his Broadline monthly. And I have some salmon oil. Is there anything else you can recommend? Edward is very like Your before picture but on his back half, a little on his front legs. He was down to the skin but his fur is creeping back, I am so happy to see your pictures! Thank you!

Thinking about the neutering but no chip, has he got a little section cut out of his ear? Because he may well have been caught in a TNR campaign with some ferals & they mark the "done" ones with an ear nick.

Otherwise lost of people still don't bother with the expense of getting cats chipped sadly, even otherwise responsible cat "owners" don't seem to see the point.

He will be fine - black kitties are the best Grin

LanguidLobster · 29/03/2018 18:59

Allergic with TNR is that always done just at the tip of the ear?

tearsofrobertsmith · 29/03/2018 19:00

That’s interesting, I don’t think he has a nick on his ear, didn’t notice earlier and he has finally fallen asleep upstairs so shan’t disturb him for now but will investigate further later, thank you for the suggestion. Black cats are fab aren’t they, my favourite!

My little man has a flea allergy and a dust mite allergy. Dust mite allergy unfortunately much harder to treat! He too is incredibly affectionate but was rescued from an absolute hovel when his owner went to jail, the cat he lived with had to be put down. He responds well to Allerderm, and I paid a small fortune to get a full allergy test done for him so he has his own specific immunotherapy to be injected with once a month. We also have steroid tablets for when he's bad. Best treatment of course is to keep him away from his allergens! X

Ollivander84 · 29/03/2018 20:05

Not much, just regular flea treatment, good grain free food and he has steroid jabs for overgrooming

tearsofrobertsmith · 29/03/2018 20:13

That’s so sad Emma, how awful, thanks god he has you now. Will look into Allergen. That’s reassuring Ollivander, I feel very hopeful for this scabby, baldy big lump, we are all besotted already!

I never knew that about the ears, our rescue cat (another black cat) has a tiny little Nick out of one ear. He was neutered before he moved in and id always assumed it was by his previous owners.

Emma198 · 29/03/2018 21:11

I know. Poor baby. He's a happy boy, even if he does still have a little bald belly!

Bless him.

Vinorosso74 · 29/03/2018 22:17

Brilliant news it obviously went ok with your youngest?!
We adopted our hooligan new lad in January. He is about 1 now but was taken to a vets "as a stray" neutered but not chipped which I found odd in a young cat.

StewPots · 29/03/2018 22:34

Aww how lovely OP! He looks so well settled already! What a gorgeous boy Smile

cozietoesie · 30/03/2018 02:59

My own lad had been neutered - well who would have an unneutered Siamese male around the place - but hadn't been chipped by his first owner. I guess they thought that he'd be indoors so no need.

I was going to have him chipped at first vetting, but we'd just had a MASSIVE fight - to get him there - and everyone was in such a state that the vet didn't get to it. So it can happen.

Your new lad is wonderful. Smile

Mooey89 · 30/03/2018 12:58

All is going perfectly thank you!
Although he now sleeps on our bed, shunning the beds we bought him, and likes to pounce on our feet under our covers while we sleep!

Weedsnseeds1 · 30/03/2018 17:24

He's lovely. Old girl had flea allergy. It's easily treated by being meticulous with sports on and steroid injections on the odd occasion when a flea gets a bite in ( still get the odd bite, but the flea dies if the cat is treated).
The fur grows back and you'd never know there'd been a problem, even though it looks a scabby mess at the time.
