Help our rescue boy arrives Thursday

This is our first family pet.

We get our approx 2 yr old boy on Thursday. He is adorable and we are very excited, dd is 7 and has been adding to a comprehensive list of things to get. Fab Rescue lady has sent a list of a things too.

Can anyone recommend anything that's fab and where best buys are? We have lovely new beds but nothing else.

We need a soft brush as he's quite fluffy although partly shaved at present as he was found very neglected.Sad

We need scratching post and toys and anything else you can think of.

Any help at all would be hugely appreciated. Many thanks.

You need to put him in a smaller space at first, rather than overwhelming him with the freedom of the house; obviously with access to his tray.

If he wees somewhere else, get some on a tissue and rub the tissue on the outside of the litter tray - the scent will tell him where to go.

If he shows signs of being about to 'go' (sniffing, circling) gently pick him up and put him on his tray.

ScreamingValenta · 30/03/2018 09:56

He's beautiful!

Forgot to add - clean anywhere he has been inappropriately, with either a special pet urine eliminator or a solution of biological washing powder to make sure the scent is eliminated.

LEMtheoriginal · 30/03/2018 10:03

He's lovely. Assuming that at some point he will be going outside the weeing should be temporary.

They often piss on plastic bags. No idea why - so need to be vigilant about that. Also deffo biological washing powder.

Cats do not like their litter trays near their food so keep that separate if you can and if possible have several trays. Find out what cat litter he had before . This often makes a massive difference as some cats will only use the gritty sort and vice versa.

Oh and he is gorgeous Envy

MarthasGinYard · 30/03/2018 10:09

Valenta thank you so much.

Right, I've already retrieved carrier bag and wiped it around edges of his tray as you suggested. I would never have thought to do that although, I guess it makes perfect sense. Thank you.

We are all getting a bit nervous about when next poo time may occur Sad

So I'm thinking we keep him in kitchen now to settle him. Do litter trays need to be in a corner?

We don't know where he slept last night as we left his new bed and various blankets around but don't think he used them.

Lem thank you.

I will certainly have to get out of my habit of unloading my shopping and leaving the carriers by door then for sure.

We bought the same litter as foster lady it's a woody type pellet stuff from B&M.

Yes We definitely want him to venture out at some point, although we have to wait for all his fur to grow back and they have advised 8 weeks in at least.

Thanks so much he is just so fussy and gentle with my dd too. She adores him.

Litter tray in a corner, yes, as cats like a bit of privacy - but leave space round it for him to perch on the edge if he wants to.

Once he is used to using it, if you want to relocate it you can do so by gradually moving it to the new place (a foot or so per day towards new location).

It's normally recommended that you have two trays (at least while he is not going out). 1 per cat plus 1 is the recommended ratio. My cats like different trays for pooing and weeing!

MarthasGinYard · 30/03/2018 20:34

He's used his tray twice now

So proud of him Grin

Having a late supper tonight, hasn't eaten much all day so perhaps this is his normal food time.

💕💕💕 love him! I can't have a cat but I do get lots of kitty cuddles at work. I love looking at other people's kitty pictures

EachandEveryone · 30/03/2018 22:08

Aw whatshisname?

mimibunz · 30/03/2018 22:11

My boy loves a good old fashioned shoe lace! 😸

mimibunz · 30/03/2018 22:13

He’s gorgeous!

ScreamingValenta · 30/03/2018 22:35

Isn't his tail fantastic? Glad to hear he's using his tray now.

Weedsnseeds1 · 31/03/2018 00:02

Oh, he's lovely!
My fluffy boy loves being brushed. Tangle teasers ( of the type designed for humans) are great, he also enjoys the type with fine, metal bristles. Get him into the habit now, as they can start matting when moulting sets in ( about now as spring is sprung).
Get a few cheap cardboard scratchers for now until you know if he likes horizontal or vertical.
Biological washing powder or pet odour remover for inappropriate wees.
Toys can be home made - foil or paper balls, plastic rings from milk bottles, bits of ribbon etc.
Enjoy your gorgeous boy!

Want2beme · 31/03/2018 10:23

He's stunning. He's settling in well for you.

MarthasGinYard · 31/03/2018 10:58

Thanks all he's just fantastic we are so lucky.

He's using his tray perfectly, even trying to flick back in bits of litter which have come out, beyond sweet.

He curled up on dd lap yesterday for first time and is loving his food.

We have used all your recommendations from this thread you have all given such great advice.

The catnip toy made us all chuckle went down a storm. Off to get a new supply.

Zoo plus website is amazing bought a fab cardboard scratcher to see if he prefers that. It's like a huge sculptured piece of art.

Won't be for long Grin

As many of you have said he hasn't yet been near his bed. He's been nesting on a dining chair tucked under table. He was brilliant going into kitchen for the night he has all he needs in there. Didn't meow or anything.

We keep just going awwww

Is that tail real?

MarthasGinYard · 31/03/2018 13:19

It's so bushy
And with his little shaved body he looks like Basil brush Grin

Flick..litter...back...in??

God could I borrow him for a few days to teach mine? It can get like gravel city here sometimes.

Another one in awe of the tail, it should have its own Instagram page :)
