Cat in france

Hi - my friend's mum (lived in France with her cat) has died very suddenly. My friend wants to take the cat back home to Canada with her. However, we are trying to sort out various options - are there any french posters who know how much it costs to get all the innoculations etc and a passport in France?

I think the best thing to do is visit a vet in France to discuss it with them. My cats have travelled in Europe with pet passports and I think I paid €90'ish per passport. I dont think she'll have to pay more than €150. The microchip, if required for Canada, might cost around €30 includIng registration with microchip company. I believe Air Canada carry pets, so you could look at their website for pet travel cost. Your friends local French vet should be able to advise.

Thanks. Unfortunately the friend lives in Canada (but is visiting England as her mum died here in England while staying with other family). So currently cat is in France alone, being fed by neighbour. Our french is not good enough to phone a French vet to ask.

You may require an export health certificate to go to Canada as it is outside the EU and are outside the mutual passport regulations. I can't remember what is likely to be on Canada's certificate, but some countries have complicated procedures including blood tests.
Don't under estimate the cost of airfares, it is much more expensive to transport a cat than a human.

Canada is actually one of the easiest countries to export pets to, literally all that they require is a rabies vaccination and a certificate stating such. They don’t even need a microchip.

The cat may already be vaccinate against rabies as it is a recommended standard vaccination there.

She can take the cat home with her on Air Canada as her carry-on item.

I'd ring round a few vets and ask if anyone there speaks English. Also if you cant find one then ask on the local facebook page if there was an English speaker who could ask the vet for you. There will be someone who can help I'm sure.

Thanks guys! Much appreciated. It definitely looks and cheapest to get cookie his jabs etc and take him direct to Canada as baggage ... We will have to try to work out how to do that. Coming via UK looks much more tricky and expensive.
