She won't use a tray

Dcat3 won't use her tray. She will pee and poo near them, but not in them.

We have 3 trays for 3 cats and they are no where near food and are in quiet areas. We have tried with different litter but that's not working either.

She's a highly strung, skittish little girl and I hate the thought of her doing this because she might be unhappy.

Any ideas?

Is her tray bg enough and has she been litter trained, if it's near them can you put pads or old papers down for her to use. Is her tray well away from the other 2.

Are you cleaning them out enough? I've known cats not want to use a tray thats been used just once before.Try a big tray on newspaper and we you see her wanting to go plonk her on it.

Can she get into the tray easily? Does she need one with a lower side. Each time you see her going towards the tray, follow her and put her in it. You'll probably have to do this many times, but it should do the trick. The rule is 1 tray per cat plus 1. Is her tray in a quiet place?

Thanks for the response,

Yes litter trained (she's 6- probably should have added that!)

We tend to not see her go to per/poo, we hear her frantically scratching as cats do to cover up.

Trays are in 3 different rooms

Maybe we don't clean them out often enough, we pick out poos with a scoop when they happen but we change the whole tray every few days.

I hate to thin she is stressed or scared 😟

Was she previously an outdoor cat? My cat is 6 and has not used litter since he was a kitten - recently he had to be kept in because he was unwell and he absolutely would not use the litter tray. I don't know whether he had forgotten what it was for or if he just didn't want to.

They have a cat flap and come and go as they please until it gets dark when I lock them in.
