Cat allergies?

Talk to me about cat allergies! How would you find out if it was a definite thing?

We have had our kittens since last July and I couldn’t love them more - although they rule the house Grin

However my husband has been unwell since November and we have assumed it was just this bad winter. Endless wheezes, cold like symptoms, irritated throat and airways. Last week at the doctors he was asked if he smokes / drinks / has pets etc and when he mentioned the cats the doctor asked if it could be them....

Is this likely? We don’t allow them in our room ( personal preference) but they roam free throughout the rest of the house. If it’s a possibility how can we minimise his discomfort?

Thank you

Get him to take antihistamine and if symptoms improve it is likely an allergic reaction and possibly the cats. Ds seems to have developed an allergy to cats since our dcat died a couple of years ago, so we can’t get another one Sad

What a gorgeous cat!

I think doctors jump on cat ownership as the easy option sometimes. When I had a constant cough a few years ago my GP decided it was the cat despite me telling her I was just as bad when I was away from him. Was he OK when you first got the cat?

I've been unwell on and off (more on Sad) since the beginning of December so I think there is a lot going round. Has your husband tried antihistamines?

He hasn’t yet as up until the doctor we had assumed just typical illness (I’ve also had a run of bad health) - it’s just now he seems to think it is them. I’ll get him some antihistamines tomorrow and see how he gets on! Thanks all

Toe floofs!
I have a very cute cat (with toe floofs) that I’m slightly allergic to. Most of the time I’m fine but if something sets of my allergies (like a cat scratch or some perfume) then I sometimes have to take antihistamines to stop the itchy eyes and sneezing.
Vacuum regularly and keep the cat out of the bedroom is probably the best advice, although I don’t follow it myself anymore now that the cat has been here a while and my allergies have died down. She goes where she pleases now.

I'm very mildly allergic to cats (as well as ironing Wink) and always have been, but I decided that having them was worth the occasional itching & burning eyes, and the sneezing. Of course it doesn't help that i've been known to lie next to Boycat with my face buried in his floofy tummy Grin, but the cuddles are worth it.

Antihistamines do help a bit, but tbh I've had a bit of a snuffle that isn't cat related since before Christmas, blocked sinuses & a bit of a wheeze in the chest; these aren't notmal allergy symptoms for me, and I think it's just one of those viruses that seem to be hanging around this year.

Sounds likely.

DH takes daily antihistamines.

Worth it.
