Should i let my cat out in the snow?

Hi everyone,

One of my cats is desperate to go outside. There's a lot of snow on the ground here. She has been whinging and whinging for hours now and she is driving us INSANE. I let her out for a bit yesterday (supervised), she walked on the patio in a loop and came straight back in. I let her out again for a bit today (again, supervised), she wandered around the garden and jumped up on the fence about to disappear next door so I grabbed her & brought her inside.

Will it be safe for her in this temperature/with all the snow around? Im worried she will get frostbite on her paws or something Blush she is a maine coon cross if that helps! She's just making so much noise and will not settle!

I think if she is able to get in again as soon as she wants to she will be fine.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 02/03/2018 13:35

They're not stupid, she won't stay out long enough to get dangerously cold. Let her out for a play.

rainbowcakes · 02/03/2018 13:38

Thank you both. She went missing for nearly a month recently which is probably why im being a bit over cautious! Smile

My cat has been out several times, although not for very long. She looked like she was having good fun playing!

ButtonLoon · 02/03/2018 13:40

Maine Coons are practically built for this weather! My plain old moggy has been loving it. :)

lovetheway · 02/03/2018 13:43

My utter weirdos keep popping out and are loving it. I had to call Omar in as my neighbor works for the CLP and I'm worried she'll think I'm bad cat mother Grin

toldmywrath · 02/03/2018 13:45

My cats go in and out at will through their cat flap. I've noticed that they're not stopping out longer than necessary. Poor things insist on doing their usual toileting outside!

Chewbecca · 02/03/2018 13:46

My cat is still going out, briefly, to go to the loo. She's a bit confused about where to go so gives up and goes in the snow then digs at the snow to cover it up.

She comes back in via the cat flap as soon as she's done.

She also keeps having crazy 5 mins indoors which is unusual and I assume is because she's missing out on her usual fun and games outside.

Thanks everyone, glad your cats are enjoying the snow & coming home safe!

Ironically, she settled down as soon as I posted this...its like she knew! Grin no doubt she'll want to go out when she wakes up and over the weekend, so I'll let her out for a bit Smile

My cat doesn’t want to go out. She always goes to the toilet outside and doesn’t have a litter tray any more. This morning she has weed on a pile of clean washing and pooed on the carpet Envy (not envy). Will be finding a litter tray for her today!

Onetraumaatatimeplease · 02/03/2018 17:28

My cat murdered a mouse and left it on the grass, for late night entertainment I presume just before it started to snow. Now she can't get to it. She is showing signs of deep depression. I'm talking, gazing out of the windows crying, lying on the floor, with her chin literally on the floor, crying at the back door and when I open it she cries again. I've tried telling her it will be over soon, be brave, plenty more mice in the field etc. But I know, when you're that depressed that only one thing can help.

Colin is still not home Sad he’s been out since 9, and despite his reputation he is not next door. I am very worried about him. He only ate a tiny bit of his breakfast and hasn’t been back for more food. Am going to send dh out looking for him when he gets home. It’s so so cold here, he will be ok right???

lorisparkle · 02/03/2018 17:50

When our cats were younger one went out in the snow and did not come back for ages. I was so worried, eventually she rocked up, dry as a bone! No idea where she had been but cats are usually very good at finding a warm dry spot.

Kenworthington · 02/03/2018 18:08

Oh I hope you’re right loris

Kenworthington · 02/03/2018 18:29

He’s just sauntered in! Wet and cold but ALIvE hurrah

toldmywrath · 02/03/2018 18:30

Ken, I hope Colin is snuggled somewhere. We adopted a cat years ago and he disappeared for ten days during really cold snowy weather. We'd only had him a few weeks and he escaped. But lord knows where he went, he was hale and hearty when he returned.

toldmywrath · 02/03/2018 18:30

Hurrah! Cross post of the best kind. Smile

Kenworthington · 02/03/2018 18:42

He’s not eating his food though and didn’t finish his brekkie this morning which is unlike him as he is a total gannet. I have. I idea where he’s been or what he’s been up to!

ElizaDontlittle · 02/03/2018 18:49

My 11mo got very excited about the snow - but really hates the wind. My older girl is not fussed on the cold at all but insists on going to the toilet outside and then comes back in pretty sharpish! They've got fur coats, I'm sure short bursts when it's optional for them to stay inside is ok.

ElizaDontlittle · 02/03/2018 18:50

Is some other neighbour feeding Colin fresh chicken Ken? Or do you think he's poorly??

Steeley113 · 02/03/2018 18:52

My feral tom has only come in for food and fuss and left again. He won’t be inside for longer then an hour (he has a little shelter but prefers to get cosy under cars and in the neighbours garage Grin) my other one has been going out for an hour at a time and then miaowing loudly to come back in then leaving soggy wet patches on the furniture where he’s slept drying off Hmm

Kenworthington · 02/03/2018 19:10

He doesn’t seem poorly eliza I suspect he’s a bit of a six dinner sid

Judydreamsofhorses · 02/03/2018 19:14

My cat won’t go out, and must be desperate for the loo. She went in the bath yesterday. DP cleared all the snow from her usual toilet area and carried her out to it, but she just ran back into the house. (We’ve always had a litter tray for her but she stopped using it as soon as we started letting her out.)

Papergirl1968 · 02/03/2018 19:46

Dcat cried for ages at the door refusing to go out before using his litter tray in disgust. Did a massive poo and ran upstairs at 200mph as if say that feels better!
