Rescue cat has disappeared up the chimney

We brought home our rescue cat yesterday. He is nervous and spent all of last night under the bed refusing to come out even for food. Left him in the lounge today whilst we all went to the park. Got back to see he is missing and from the mess on the fireplace has clearly gone up the chimney. My question is what do we do next? Will he be able to get back down? We live in a Victorian terrace could he possibly get right to the top and not the roof? I have had a good look and he certainly not on the roof now but no sounds from the fireplace either!

Can you put a plate of lightly warmed tuna in the grate? He will need a bath when he comes down, soots pretty toxic.

I’m sorry I can’t offer any help, I do hope you can tempt him out though. Poor thing.

ScreamingValenta · 24/02/2018 16:01

It sounds as though he's found a ledge to sit on and fallen asleep up there. I think chimney pots normally have some kind of filter to stop things coming down your chimney (but not an expert so may be wrong) so I'd doubt he could get onto your roof. I agree with Fluffy - get some strong smelling food and put it by the grate.

We had this happen with ours when she first arrived too. He will come down when it's quiet & he is hungry. Ours took 2 days though.

Turns out ours is a sod for exploring any dark hole as she's had us stressed to hell with her antics over the years. Disappearing down the hole the plumber was just about to fit the new loo into was a crowning moment Hmm She's lovely though Smile

As above, smelly foods & Shake a bag & leave some dreamies down. Maybe think of ringing the rescue centre for tips on his favourite foods, then use those as bait.

Oh & no, we live in a similar property. Chimney sweep friend reassured us there is no way to the top for a cat though our little monkey has found other ways out onto our 3 story roofHmm

We come across this from time to time at our charity (and always advice to block chimney when bringing in a new cat now!). There is usually a ledge very low down - if you put your hand up there you can probably feel it, or use a flashlight and you'll see it. It's big enough for the cat to sit on.

It's not the nicest of places of course so I'd try to tempt him down with smelly food and then block the chimney temporarily (old pillow or similar is perfect).

ScreamingValenta · 24/02/2018 23:34

Is there any sign of him yet, OP?

RamblinRosie · 24/02/2018 23:46

Yup, there's a ledge, he's probably there, leave a selection of smelly food stuff down below. Mine go mad for chicken pate.

(Ha, got a pot of Heston chicken parfait from Waitrose last night £3.99 reduced to 25p, my Muffin went mad for the leftovers)

One of mine hid for a week when I got her. Leave him too it. He'll come out when he's ready. A cat will not make itself uncomfortable. Good luck with bathing him though!

I've moved house very recently & picked up mine from the cattery today, now things have calmed down a bit.

They have been sitting in their travel box for three hours even though they hate it , refusing to be tempted out.

Ho hum - cats! Grin

PussGirl · 26/02/2018 20:27

One has explored the whole house & has chosen a favourite spot on the stairs just where I can trip over her Very purry.

The other is on the top of the high cupboard in the kitchen & won't come down. Also very purry.

She will accept hand-fed crunchies though Hmm Grin

EachandEveryone · 27/02/2018 00:27

Is he down?

AnduinsGirl · 27/02/2018 01:01

My cat did this while I was moving house and I was so damn worried! I just shut the door to the room, let food underneath and went out for a few hours. When I came home, I crept into the room and thankfully he had come down. Try not to stress - I know you'll imagine him thirty feet in the air but I bet you anything he's literally just up the chimney on a ledge!

Dodie66 · 28/02/2018 12:50

Has he surfaced ?
